The program’s aim is to provide eight weeks of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences to undergraduate students from various countries (including some from Japan) who are committed to or considering a career in biology or related sciences and want to continue their studies at the graduate level.
Faculty members from the Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Engineering, Graduate School of Science, Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and the Institute of Industrial Science provide research opportunities. Students are expected to have acquired knowledge and abilities for conducting research by the end of their summer program.
Students are also expected to broaden their international friendships as a result of their joint activities. These experiences will assist students in developing future cooperation in a variety of contexts.

The stipend should be used freely to budget for food and any personal trips during your stay in Japan. - TRAVEL COSTS:
Domestic students will be given with economy-class airline tickets or round-trip train tickets to participate in the program and the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium in Singapore. Based on discussions between participants and the program office, the most cost-effective and direct route and travel itinerary will be determined. If the participant’s itinerary is changed for personal reasons, they will be asked to return the University of Tokyo the cost of the original booked flights.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program must be undergraduate students who are:
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree-granting college or university anywhere in the globe; and
- Have completed their first year of undergraduate education by the time the summer program begins, and
- Are not graduating before the summer program begins, and will return to undergraduate studies for at least one semester or quarter after the summer program concludes
Applicants to the UTokyo Amgen Scholars Program must also:
- Have an excellent academic track record; and
- Have an excellent working understanding of English, as indicated by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72, IELTS overall band score of 5.5, Cambridge English FCE, TOEIC score of 1095, TOEIC L&R score of 785, or TOEIC S&W score of 310 if you are not a native English speaker or English is not your first language, and
- Have a desire to pursue a Ph.D.
