PhD Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries at Ghent University,2023

Ghent University offers PhD “sandwich” scholarships to deserving students from developing nations who prefer to do half of their research at Ghent University (the “North”) and half at a university in a developing country (the “South”) with funding from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF).

Ghent University will only fund the portion of the research that will be conducted in Ghent (24 months); the candidate must secure full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be conducted in the South.

  • The Ghent University promoter receives a bench fee of € 310 per month of research at Ghent plus a travel budget of € 8,000 to cover (part of) the operational costs as well as a portion of the student’s and the promoters’ travel expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must originate from and be citizens of a developing countries (see country list)
  • The ideas must be submitted jointly by a candidate, a Ghent University supervisor (promoter), and a partner university supervisor (South)
  • The scope of research is unrestricted, although development-relevant issues will be given preference.
  • Only degree students (students intending to get a (joint) PhD at Ghent University) may apply. Exchange students are ineligible for this award.
  • The university of Ghent aims to encourage more women to apply for this award. Therefore, a Ghent University supervisor can only recommend two candidates each call if they are of different genders.

How to apply

  • Electronic submission of application forms (in English) by email to [email protected] is required.
  • In addition to the application form, the Ghent University supervisor must send the two documents listed below:
    • A recommendation on the candidate outlining the supervisor’s assessment of the candidate’s potential as a future researcher.
    • Ethical and biosafety recommendations for the proposed research endeavor
