About the International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA)

Advertising

Education is one of the Union’s most important responsibilities. The International School for Young Astronomers (ISYAs) was founded in 1967 as a project of the International Astronomical Union (IAU). ISYAs aim to broaden participants’ perspectives on astronomy through lectures from an international faculty on selected topics, seminars, practical exercises and observations, and the exchange of experiences.

The IAU Commission 46 Astronomy Education & Development is involved in two astronomy development schools, ISYA and TAD (Teaching for Astronomy Development).

The Office for Young Astronomers (OYA) was founded in 2015 by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters (NASL) and the IAU to ensure a solid financial and organizational foundation for the ISYA program’s operation.

This office was established as a result of a previous agreement signed in 2008 between NASL and the IAU. The OYA is a virtual office run by a Steering Committee that is chaired by an IAU Vice-President. OYA is headquartered at the NASL in Oslo, Norway.

Scholarship Benefit

Acceptance to the school includes flights to and from South Africa (including domestic flights), as well as lodging and meals at the ISYA. All selected students are expected to devote 100% of their time to participating in all planned activities during the three-week school session (we will start each day at 9am and end about 7pm).
