ACU Summer School for University Students 2023

This is an exciting opportunity to study about the political, social, and economic dynamics that drove twentieth-century South African politics, especially apartheid, with your peers from throughout the Commonwealth.

This is an exciting opportunity to study about the political, social, and economic dynamics that drove twentieth-century South African politics, especially apartheid, with your peers from throughout the Commonwealth.

This is the first time the program will be held in a winter environment, hosted by Stellenbosch University.

Over the course of a week, students will learn about South Africa’s continuing reconciliation process through lectures, debates, and group project work. Hear from academic specialists who will help you build your own view on the country’s complicated past.

Take a field trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists were imprisoned. Make new friends from all around the Commonwealth while learning about historical events in an open, accepting, international setting.

About the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)

Representatives from 53 institutions gathered in London, UK, in 1912, on the proposal of the University of London, to host a Congress of Universities of the Empire. In 1913, the Universities Bureau of the British Empire opened an office in London.

The name of the Bureau was changed to the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth in 1948. The Association got a Royal Charter under its new name,

The Association of Commonwealth Universities, in 1963 (our jubilee year). Her Majesty the Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, became Patron of the ACU in 1986. Her Majesty transferred up her patronage to The Duchess of Sussex after 33 years of service, and she became Patron of the ACU in 2019.

The cost of full participation in the program will be covered, including:

  • Accommodation on campus
  • Transport
  • Meals on campus
  • Social activities and excursions
  • Economy return flights/travel from your home country and travel to the university for students travelling from outside South Africa

Eligibility Criteria

The ACU Summer School encourages applications from current postgraduate students (both master’s and PhD) and final-year undergraduate students from ACU member universities. To find out if your university is an ACU member, click on the link.

The ACU Summer School is designed for students who are pursuing a course that examines themes linked to truth and reconciliation and/or who have a personal interest in truth and reconciliation.

Students who have never been outside of their native region are encouraged to apply. This does not apply to ACU scholars or students studying in their host nation of South Africa.

We also encourage submissions from students from under-represented backgrounds in international higher education, such as students with disabilities, indigenous students, and those who have never traveled outside their native geographic region for job, study, or recreation.

Students who have attended an ACU Summer School in the past are not eligible to apply.
