The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) at Stellenbosch University is pleased to offer a limited number of candidates at the beginning of their Doctoral careers the opportunity to attend research, publishing, scientific communication, and career-related training courses at the ADA Summer School, which will be held in-person at Stellenbosch University from January 18 to February 3, 2023.
This call is accessible to all doctorate candidates in their first 18 months of study, from all institutions and fields. Some of the scholarships are intended for delegates from Stellenbosch University’s partner universities. A list of partner universities is available at the bottom of this page. ?
The ADA will present the Summer School 2023 in person at Stellenbosch University. Stellenbosch University certifies all courses, and delegates who satisfy the requirements will be granted an electronic certificate.

About the Stellenbosch University

Scholarship Benefit
Successful candidates will be able to enroll in a fully funded course during the Summer School. Applicants may pick a first and second course preference. The value of the award will be determined by the course chosen by the candidate, as well as additional connected fees such as travel, lodging, and so on.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:
- They must be in the early stages of their PhD (the first 18 months) and can be from any subject.
- Be enrolled at their home institution by 1 January 2023 and for no more than 18 months by 18 January 2023.
Documents Required for Application
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- A formal proof of registration at your home university, clearly identifying your PhD degree registration date
- Your supervisor’s written approval/referee report
- On university letterhead, with the signature of your supervisor (current (home) supervisor) or head of department endorsing the applicant’s application. This indicates the applicant’s home supervisor’s/head of department’s consent to participate in the ADA’s Doctoral School and provides validity to the applicant’s aim.
- Additional points will be provided throughout the assessment process if your supervisor, in addition to approving your application, inspires your candidacy and eligibility for the program.

- Applicants may apply for just one course throughout the school year, however they may designate a first and second option (if applicable). We will make every effort to provide you with the course of your choice.
- As part of the application procedure, you must upload the required papers. Email documents will not be accepted. Please follow the naming convention: your surname.document type (for example smit.curriculumvitae.doc). (Required papers are listed on the application form.)
If you do not submit all of the needed paperwork by the closing date, your application will be considered incomplete. All essential papers must be supplied at the same time in order to submit the form.

Please note:
- The ADA maintains the right not to make any program selections.
- The ADA also maintains the right to revoke any scholarship grants given, including if a delegate is unable to commit to the full period of the program.
- Candidates who have received African Doctoral Academy or other support from Stellenbosch University International in the past 18 – 24 months will be placed on a supplementary list of applicants to ensure an equal allocation of available funds.
- Female candidates and candidates enrolled at an African university will be given extra credit throughout the evaluation procedure.
