The Department metamorphosed from Department of Languages and Literature (housing B.A. French and B.A. English) in the former Bendel State University, Abraka as at 1991/1992 through Modern European Languages (1992/1993) with Mr. Dumbi Osani then, (now Dr. Dumbi Osani rtd.) as the first (Ag.) Head of Department into Languages and Linguistics under the sole administratorship of Professor Abednego Ikoko.

Mr. Osani was succeeded by Dr. Simeon E. Osazuwa then, (now Prof. Simeon E. Osazuwa rtd.) who acted as the Head from 1993/1994 -2002/2003. Subsequently, the headship of the department continued in the following sequence: Dr. (Mrs.) Rose O. Aziza then: 2003/2004 – 2005/2006 (now Prof. (Mrs.) Rose O. Aziza); Prof. B. O. Okiwelu: 2004/2005 – 2005/2006; Dr. Anthony O. Biakolo (of blessed memory): 2006/2007 – 2007/2008; Dr. (Mrs.) Elizabeth E. Ogini: 2008/2009 – 2009/2010; Dr. Jiff I. Mokobia then: 2010/2011 – 2013/2014 (now Prof. Jiff I. Mokobia); Prof. James E. Obitaba 2014/2015 – 2016/2017; Dr. (Mrs.) Rita O. Mebitaghan then: 2017/2018 – 2019/2020 (now Prof. (Mrs.) Rita O. Mebitaghan); Dr. Emeka C. Ifesieh – April, 2020 till date.

The special focus of the Department as an academic unit is humanism, human complex nature and the enduring relations within the society. Specifically, it deals with human development, apprehension and interpretation of reality through language and literature. Department of Languages and Linguistics, DELSU, Abraka offers good arrangements (intensive and part-time) for both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

The degree programmes are: Diploma in French; B.A. in French; B.A. in Linguistics; B.A. in Linguistics/Urhobo; M.A. in French; Ph.D in French (African Literature in French/French Literature/Comparative Literature/French Language/Translation Studies). Efforts are underway to begin postgraduate programmes in Linguistics at both Master’s and Ph.D levels given the strong academic staff strength of the Department. 

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The Undergraduate programme in the Department of Linguistics Studies has two major objectives:

- Advertising -
  • To provide a broad and general training in theoretical and applied Linguistics.
  • To help students achieve an awareness of language systems in general and of African languages in particular.
  • The Department stresses a fundamental understanding of the ever-changing linguistic environment in which students live, so that they can apply their knowledge to various problems of human communication. To achieve these objectives, students are encouraged to take language-related courses in English, Sociology and History.

DEGREE PROGRAMMES

The Department offers programmes leading to the award of both the Single Honours Degree and the Combined Honours Degree.

Courses are available for the award of the B.A. (Combined Honours) Degree in Linguistics/Edo Language and B.A. (Combined Honours) in Linguistics/Igbo language as well as B.ED/Linguistics/Edo and B.ED./ Linguistics/Igbo. It is hoped that programmes in other Nigerian languages will be introduced as soon as staff are available.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Single Honours: Apart from meeting the University and Faculty admission requirement of 5 credits level passes, candidates intending to read for the Single Honours Degree in Linguistics should also have at least a pass in Mathematics: 5 additional credit-level passes are required.

Combined Honours Linguistics: The requirements are the same as those of the Faculty in general, except that students who may wish to pursue degree courses in a Nigerian Language must have a good command of the Language. Those for the programme may or may not possess a pass in mathematics. Direct Entry admission requirements in the Linguistics/Edo Programme are as follows:

  • As for U.M.E., and
  • ‘A’ Level passes in English Literature and at least one other Arts subject.
  • at least 5 other credit passes at ‘O’ Level or T.C.II, merits, or N.C.E.
  • (Double Major ) and at least 3 other credit passes at ‘O’ Level or T.C. II merits.

Combined Honours Linguistics Programme:
The requirements are the same as those of the Faculty in general, except that students must also have at least a credit-level pass in either the NECO/WASC OR GCE O/L, or a Merit/Credit-level pass at TC II.

A pass in Mathematics is not compulsory but an advantage.

Direct Entry candidates must include a pass at A/L. Candidates in N.C.E. Certificate or a Diploma in  Language Studies are equally acceptable.

UME subjects will include two other relevant Arts Subjects. UME must include English Language. Literature in English and Igbo.

Delta State University which is popularly known as DELSU, is one of the most prestigious state owned university in Nigeria.

Delsu currently operates a multiple campus system with three distinct campuses, which are about 200 km apart.

The History of Delsu

It began as a Government Teacher’s Training college during the colonial period and a few years into the post colonial times.

Delsu became an educational college that awarded the Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) from the year 1971 to 1985.

The University got affiliated with the University of Benin in the year 1981, and started offering degree programmes from 1981 till 1985.

Before it became the faculty of Education of the then Bendel State University with its main campus in Ekpoma.

The creation of Edo and Delta states in the year August 1991 and the conversion of the formerly known Bendel University Ekpoma, in December 1991 triggered the establishment of the independent Delta State University Abraka.

This move was carried out by the then Executive Governor of the state, Olorogun Felix Ibru on the 30th of April 1992.
