The Master of Science in Sustainability is a two-year program that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to the solution of sustainability challenges.
The program integrates methods and resources from the natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities, using an innovative, interdisciplinary approach.

About the United Nations University (UNU)
The United Nations University (UNU) is a global think tank and postgraduate educational institution based in Japan. The UN University’s mission is to contribute to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems of human survival, development, and welfare that concern the United Nations, its Peoples, and Member States through collaborative research and education.
In order to carry out this mission, the UN University collaborates with leading universities and research institutes in UN Member States, serving as a link between the international academic community and the UN system.
Scholarship Benefit
As a support package, the jfUNU scholarship provides a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY for a maximum of 24 months. Scholarship recipients may be exempt from paying tuition.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Applicants must be persons from developing countries* who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance;
- Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa are NOT eligible for the scholarship;
- Applicants who are already enrolled in other postgraduate degree programmes are not eligible. This includes those who have already obtained a master’s degree at an institution other than UNU-IAS; and
- Applicants must not be recipients of other scholarships concurrently.
Additional Requirements
- Recipients of the JFUNU Scholarship are required to write a short essay on their learning and experiences at UNU, which is submitted to the donor organisation. Before graduation, each recipient is requested to submit a note of appreciation to the donors with reflections on their future plans.
- Recipients agree to foster collaboration with jfUNU through participating in jfUNU activities, events, and other opportunities offered to the student body.

How to apply

All applicants:
- Review the checklist and prepare the application materials.
- Register online (the link will be available here when the application period opens).
- Receive an email from UNU-IAS Admissions Office with a link to the Application Form.
- Submit the Application Form by the deadline (10 February 2023).
- Receive an automatic email to confirm that the Admissions Office has received your application.
Important Notes
- All application forms must be typed and filled out in English. No handwritten or incomplete application documents will be considered.
- All materials and documents submitted as part of an application become the property of UNU-IAS and cannot be returned.
- If any falsification is discovered in any of the documents presented for application, admission will be revoked.
- Unsuccessful applicants of previous years who reapply for admission must submit a completely new set of application documents, including letters of reference. No previous application materials will act as supporting documents.
- Please submit the Application Form only once. If multiple Application Forms are submitted by one applicant, the latest form received will be considered the application. Earlier versions will be disregarded.
