RMIT University 2023 PhD Scholarship in Automated Decision-Making (ADM) and Chinese Society

The scholarship is accessible for an interdisciplinary project that will investigate the social consequences of automated decision-making (ADM) technology and systems in the Chinese setting.

The PhD research project will be housed in the School of Media and Communication as well as the ARC Centre of Excellence for ADM+S. Professor Haiqing Yu, an ARC Future Fellow, will oversee the applicant. The study will investigate new (or renewed), emergent, or concealed dynamics and politics in Chinese society as they respond to, live with, or reject such ADM technologies and systems in their daily lives.

Scholarship Benefit

  • A stipend of $32,841 per year pro rata (full-time study), plus a six-month extension option.
  • International students who are awarded this scholarship will additionally receive an RTP International Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship (RIFOS) or an RMIT Research International Tuition Fee Scholarship (RRITFS).
  • RTP Fee Offset scholarships are available to all local applicants, Australian and New Zealand nationals, and permanent residents of Australia. Applicants who get an RTP Fee Offset scholarship are exempt from paying tuition fees for the length of their candidacy.
  • Paid maternity, parental, and sick leave (within the limits of the Scholarship Terms and Conditions).

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, a student must:

  • A first-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject is required (e.g., information science, sociology, digital humanities, digital health, computer science, information systems, user experience design)
  • Have good quantitative/qualitative social research AND/OR humanities research capabilities
  • Demonstrate great oral and written communication abilities.
  • Show your capacity to collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Meet the entrance criteria for RMIT University’s Higher Degree by Research programs.
  • The fellowship is accessible to both local and foreign students, however the applicant must reside in Australia at the start of the PhD program.

  • A 1-2 page research statement summarizing the study topic and research questions to be investigated, proposed methodology/methods, and a brief reference list
  • a copy of electronic academic transcripts
  • A curriculum vitae that contains any publications/awards and the contact information for two references
  • MA or Honours thesis and/or research papers

International candidates may be asked to provide proof of English competence.
