The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program and the Africa Oxford Initiative are two creative and ambitious collaborations between the University of Oxford and the Mastercard Foundation (AfOx).
The collaboration will provide 400 young African academics with a fully-funded opportunity to complete taught Masters degrees in pandemic preparedness and recovery programs at the University of Oxford.

About the University of Oxford
Oxford is a unique and historic university being the oldest university in the English-speaking world. There is no precise date of establishment, but education existed in some form at Oxford as early as 1096, and it grew significantly after 1167, when Henry II prohibited English students from visiting the University of Paris.
Scholarship Benefit
This full-cost scholarship covers international Master’s students’ tuition and living expenses. The scholarship covers practicalities, including an economy return ticket, visa and Immigration Health Surcharge payments, settling down allowance, and emergency access to a Thrive Fund. The first year incorporates a challenging Oxford Master’s course and a Leadership and Impact Programme to help academics develop collaborative leadership skills needed to solve complex social and environmental problems across sectors and disciplines.
Scholars will be assisted to complete 4-6 months of Ubuntu Period of Service at top African organizations after completing their Master’s Program. The scholars will work on initiatives in Africa and receive mentoring from top African academics and practitioners to establish influential careers in Africa.
Scholars get academic and social assistance and a customized Leadership and Impact Program from the Skoll Centre for Social Enterprise. Scholars will join the AfOx Alumni Network after graduating to continue collaborating with Oxford’s African Scholars. The Scholar Community, AfOx Research and Innovation Fellows, and the wider AfOx network of research experts and entrepreneurs provide mentorship and career support to Scholars.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation AfOx Scholarships 2023, applicants must satisfy the following criteria:
- Must be an African student interested in pursuing a master’s degree at Oxford University for the academic year of 2023.
- Applicants must hold a relevant bachelor’s degree from a reputed college or university.
- Applicants must have outstanding academic and research skills.
