About the University Of Canterbury

Advertising

The first university to be founded in Aotearoa New Zealand was Canterbury College, which was founded in 1873. It was built on the Oxbridge model, with one key difference: women were accepted from the beginning. Helen Connon, a recent graduate, became the first woman in the then-British Empire to receive honors.

The College, housed in handsome stone buildings on a major city block, was reliant on rents from high country lands donated by the Canterbury Provincial Council. In the 1890s, Canterbury’s most notable graduate, Ernest Rutherford, attended the University.
