Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick’s daughters, Elsie and Daphne Kirkpatrick, bequeathed to the School funds to establish scholarships “for the advancement and encouragement of study in the ophthalmology area” in memory of their father.
Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick (1871-1958) was drawn to ophthalmology early in his career. His tenure in the Indian Medical Service afforded possibilities to expand teaching and postgraduate training in pathology and ophthalmology through work at the General Hospital, Madras, the university, and the Government Ophthalmic Hospital.
After leaving Madras, he worked as an eye surgeon at the Tropical Diseases Hospital and as an ophthalmology instructor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
