The Department of Physiology was founded in 2001 as one of the four pioneer departments in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, which was the takeoff Faculty for the College of Health Sciences of Delta State University.
Academic activities in the Department commenced under the headship of Professor C.P. Aloamaka in the 2002/2003 session, when the MBBS programme began.

In 2004, following the proposals for the creation of B.Sc. programmes by the Dean, Prof T.S. Emudianughe and the consequent approval by the senate of Delta State University, students were admitted into the B.Sc. programme of the Department in 2004/2005 session.
The Department has full accreditation status by NUC and MDCN. The first set of student in the B.Sc programme graduated in 2007/2008 with a degree in B.Sc. Human Physiology and since then the Department has produced quality graduates who are doing well in their places of work, especially those who have gone into academics.
The Department also run postgraduate programmes leading to the award of M.Sc and Ph.D in Human Physiology and this has supported our staff development programme and boosted research.
The pioneer head of Department Professor C.P Aloamaka, has also served as Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Acting Vice-Chancellor of this University.
He laid a solid foundation for the takeoff of all the programmes domiciled in the Department of physiology. He has contributed immensely to the success of the postgraduate programmes. In fact, he has been and will remain our role model and mentor.
At the end of his tenure as the head of the Department of Physiology, Dr. W. C. Nwafia (now Professor), took over the mantle of leadership in 2005.
He unified the staff of the Department by his friendly disposition and ensured the steady growth of the Department. Dr. A.C. Okolo took over as Head of Department in 2007. He did a lot of infrastructural Development.
He handed the Department to Dr. E.K. Nwangwa in 2010. Who was the Head of Department when the Department achieved the status of full National University Commission, full medical & Dental Council of Nigeria accreditation and ensured that examination results were produced in record time.
Dr. (Mrs.) E. Adegor took over in 2012, was a mother to the Department. The Department was peaceful and things went on smoothly. Dr. A.O. Naiho took over in 2015.
He edited the Departmental Practical Manual with the contribution of other senior members of staff, and initiated the process for the reviews of the B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D. curriculum in line with the 2007 NUC Bench Mark.
He ensured that all back log or results were produced. During his tenure, he led the department successfully through National University Commission and Medical & Dental Council of Nigeria accreditation exercises, and produced this First Student Handbook for the Department. Dr. A.E Ojieh took over as Head of Department on 1st March, 2018 and with so much to do, he hit the ground running. So far, under his leadership, and with the cooperation of all members of staff, the programmes in the department have been running smoothly.

Delta State University which is popularly known as DELSU, is one of the most prestigious state owned university in Nigeria.
Delsu currently operates a multiple campus system with three distinct campuses, which are about 200 km apart.

The History of Delsu
Delta State University(Delsu) was generally recorded as a center of Education.
It began as a Government Teacher’s Training college during the colonial period and a few years into the post colonial times.
Delsu became an educational college that awarded the Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) from the year 1971 to 1985.
The University got affiliated with the University of Benin in the year 1981, and started offering degree programmes from 1981 till 1985.
Before it became the faculty of Education of the then Bendel State University with its main campus in Ekpoma.
The creation of Edo and Delta states in the year August 1991 and the conversion of the formerly known Bendel University Ekpoma, in December 1991 triggered the establishment of the independent Delta State University Abraka.
This move was carried out by the then Executive Governor of the state, Olorogun Felix Ibru on the 30th of April 1992.
Delta State University began with Five faculties at its early stage:
- Faculty of Education.
- Faculty of Agriculture.
- Faculty of Arts.
- Faculty of Science.
- Faculty of Social science.
In the year 1995, the State government enacted a policy which enabled the University to posses 3 campuses.
These campuses were distributed within the 3 senatorial districts of Delta state.
As a result of this enacted policy, the main Campus was established in Abraka, and the other campuses were established in Anwai-Asaba and Oleh.
