The Department of English and Literary Studies took off at the inception of the Delta State University, Abraka in 1992.
However, the Department’s history predates that year. Its evolution dates back to 1969 when it emerged as an integral department of the then College of Education, Abraka also founded that year.
As a result of the Department’s high academic standing, it started the degree programme in Education in affiliation with the University of Benin in 1982.
Three years later in 1985, arising from the merger of the former College of Education, Abraka with the defunct Bendel State University, Ekpoma, English became a unit in the Department of Arts Education under the Faculty of education.
It metamorphosed into the Department of English and Literary Studies in 1992 with the establishment of the Delta State University, Abraka.
