I’m quite sure you will know a village that is not known by a lot of people and is not really an exciting place to be in?? Yeah, that’s Abraka.

And ‘fortunately’ my school happens to be situated in it. How lovely! A typical village full of village people and village mentality, to make matters worse, they had to be Urhobos!.

The indigenes are almost impossible to live with, stingy, loud, dirty and too traditional, well, mostly their men. This could be seen in the way the town has been segregated.

The students had their own side of the town, the indigenes had theirs.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t intentional, maybe most students had the same feeling I had for the indigenes of the town.

Let’s not dwell on the town, shall we? Let’s look at my experiences and lessons I had to face in this town.

Lessons Abraka Taught me

First off, the small little town that I told you about, village or whatever, well, it’s not so ancient anymore. Abraka has become a town open to innovations.

Whether its through negative or positive influence, through it all. There are changes in attitudes and there is not so much difference between the indigenes and the students anymore.

What I’m trying to say is that I’ve learnt that no matter how old or ancient or bad or worthless you think you are or your situation is, have an open mind, accept change and you might just be lucky to hit your jackpot. You know what I’m trying to say, right guys??

1. Be Content

So you all know how you want to belong, be in vogue, try to blend in? C’mon, no one wants be tagged a ‘junky‘. (although in this era of civilization, a junky isn’t a bad thing).

So let’s rephrase that. No one wants to be old fashioned, or called the good and holy person especially girls who do not want to be tagged ‘Rosemary‘ or ‘Mary-Amaka‘.

Yeah! We have a lot of those in Abraka and they are willing to go an extra mile to be among the top notch in the town.

The life of a human became less important and a vital ingredient in the making of money.

Ladies who are the major recipients of both ‘ends’ cared less because they don’t want to be left out in the race of the latest fashion.

I practically saw the hunger and love of money up close and when the Bible said

“the love of money is the root of all evils”

it wasn’t a made up statement. In the midst of all that, learning how to survive and still maintaining your morals became a task that must be done.

In a place where morals and humanity are being tossed to the back to attain anything, you surely can imagine how difficult that must be.

Just imagine a scenario where in your department in school, as a girl you haven’t changed your hair in a month and you are in the midst of girls who wear expensive hair and weaves which are being changed in less than weeks, surely you would feel poor because certainly I felt same.

Oh well, maintaining morals and keeping up to standards can be tricky but I didn’t ‘slack’.

Don’t let the wave of what’s surrounding you decide how to live your life. You can choose your path and you can achieve your goal.

2. Love

Another thing this town taught me is the responsibilities of love. Finding real love in a town like abraka is like finding a needle in a hay stack.

Finding love is different from being in a relationship. Most individuals in abraka are in relationships of some sort.

A few seemed genuine in the beginning as it looked all lovey dovey with all the sunshine and rainbows.

Gradually, needs starts to set in, behavioral changes starts to set in and so on. All these are mostly caused by external forces which shakes the relationship and ends up being broken.

One major external force is finance. Yeah we are back to money. Money is like a tread that is interwoven with the very fiber of living.

Without it you are doomed and condemned to being anti social. Most relationships I see in this town are money based and when that money is taken from it, there is nothing but misery.

That’s not love, is it? I’ve seen very few relationships that pure love is the bed rock of their relationship and trust, the watch word.
Well, the world is like a game board. There are players, pieces and onlookers.

Its your choice to choose where and who you want to be. The lessons you learn everyday doesn’t define you. You define you. Your decisions after those lessons defines you.

They say experience is the best teacher. True but a wiser man doesn’t wait for his own experience, he avoids it by learning from others experiences.

Someone fell into a pit on his way. You don’t have to wait to fall into that same pit, do you?

You learn from other peoples’ experiences. Be your own person, trust yourself and learn. Have beautiful days ahead guys.
