The Playford Trust offers three PhD Scholarships in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG).
Under the leadership of the Chief Defence Scientist, the DSTG is the Australian Government’s lead agency dedicated to providing science and technology support for the Australian Defence Force. After the CSIRO, the DSTG is Australia’s largest publicly funded science agency.
Scholarship recipients may be offered work experience such as summer jobs, internships, site visits, and attendance at in-house seminars. The Department of Defense will speak directly with scholarship recipients about any potential work experience.
The scholarships are meant to supplement an existing Australian Government Research Training Program Stipend Scholarship (RTPS) or a comparable institutional PhD stipend scholarship.
Students must be conducting research at The University of Adelaide, Flinders University, or the University of South Australia in one of the following Defence priority areas:
- Space and defence technology
- Health sciences and enabling technologies
Students must be starting their PhD in the scholarship year or have started their PhD no earlier than August of the previous year.
The Trust will consider an application for a time extension if progress has been made and appropriate support has been received from the university and the PhD supervisor. Such an extension is not automatically approved.
