About Erasmus University Rotterdam

In the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands is where you’ll find the public research institution known as Erasmus University Rotterdam. It was named after the humanist and theologian Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus, who lived during the 15th century.

On November 8, 1913, Erasmus University Rotterdam was founded as the Netherlands School of Commerce (Nederlandsche Handels-Hoogeschool, or NHH). This was a private project that had a lot of support from Rotterdam’s business community.

In 1937, the school was given university status and was recognized as a place where students could learn about business and economics as a subject.

But this led to a name change: the NHH became the Netherlands School of Economics, or NEH (Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool). In the 1960s, Law and Social Sciences departments were created because society was getting more complicated. Over the next few decades, Philosophy, History, Arts, and Business Administration departments were added.

The economics faculty is ranked 9th in Europe (including the UK) and 50th in the world in economics and econometrics and 37th in the world in accounting and finance by the QS World University Rankings 2018. (10th best in Europe).

In 2020, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings put Erasmus University’s Economics and Business program first in the Netherlands, seventh in Europe, and 28th in the world.

Also, the 2018 Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking of World Universities lists Erasmus School of Economics as the 9th best economics and business school in Europe and the 32nd best in the world.

US News 2022 says that Erasmus University Rotterdam is the best school for Economics and Business in the Netherlands, Europe, and the whole world.
