BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The department started its students’ intake with the Certificate Programme during the 2010/2011 academic year. The B.A. degree programme in music of the department commenced during the 2011/2012 academic year with 40 students, most of whom were graduates of the certificate programme.

PHILOSOPHY
The rationale behind the establishment of a department of music in the Delta State University is to create an enabling environment where music as an art can be exposed, expressed, practised, and appreciated.
The curriculum has also been designed to cater for the interest of students who intend to offer a full four-year Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, as well as graduate programmes in music.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The Department of Music, Delta State University which has been designed to accommodate a four-year Bachelor’s degree in such major areas as composition and theory, African music, musicology, production and management, and performance, when established, would provide talented and highly motivated students with theoretical, conceptual and technical skills needed to excel as professional musicians and by extension artists of international repute.
Taken together, the courses are designed to promote a well-rounded music education. The aim is to produce graduates who are well positioned to meet the demands of a dynamic society. The department comprises a cope of highly trained academics and professionals for these goals.
The objectives of the Department of Music, Delta State University, are as follows:
- To serve as a cultural centre not only for the University and its community, but also for the larger Nigerian and world community;

The History of Delsu
Delta State University(Delsu) was generally recorded as a center of Education.
It began as a Government Teacher’s Training college during the colonial period and a few years into the post colonial times.
Delsu became an educational college that awarded the Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE) from the year 1971 to 1985.
The University got affiliated with the University of Benin in the year 1981, and started offering degree programmes from 1981 till 1985.
Before it became the faculty of Education of the then Bendel State University with its main campus in Ekpoma.
The creation of Edo and Delta states in the year August 1991 and the conversion of the formerly known Bendel University Ekpoma, in December 1991 triggered the establishment of the independent Delta State University Abraka.
This move was carried out by the then Executive Governor of the state, Olorogun Felix Ibru on the 30th of April 1992.
Delta State University began with Five faculties at its early stage:
- Faculty of Education.

In the year 1995, the State government enacted a policy which enabled the University to posses 3 campuses.
