In a statement released on Monday, the Delta State University, Abraka chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expressed disappointment in the government’s failure to honour agreements reached with the union.

Delta State University pledged to actively participate in the looming industrial strike in order to compel the government to meet the union’s (ASUU) demands.

A communiqué signed by Prof. Godwin Demaki, chairman of the DELSU, and Dr. Paul Opone, secretary, and made available to newsmen in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.

Pointed to the fault that the government is lacking the political will to reposition the education sector in the country through improved funding.

Delsu to Join ASUU Strike

According to the communiqué released by the DELSU.

In a statement, the union stated that it would no longer tolerate the government’s disregard for collective bargaining agreements, Memorandums of Action (MoA), and Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) that were intended to improve education in the country.

On Tuesday, February 8, 2022, the DELSU chapter of the union resolved to support the resumption of the union’s halted strike that began on January 20, 2020, in protest of the government’s inability to sign and implement the renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, which was signed in 2009.

The union urged the government to prevent additional revenue leakages in order to ensure that the Nigerian public university system could be adequately funded.

According to the DELSU branch of the union, while the government is recklessly underfunding colleges, both the state and federal governments are rushing to construct new universities without a serious commitment to funding.
