A basic assumption used to argue for offshore fish farms is that operating in deeper and more turbulent seas will increase horizontal dispersion of organic farm wastes and decrease impacts on seabed ecosystem processes. The initiative encourages international PhD students in New Zealand.

Our ability to quantify this advantage will determine societal license for such expansion. Deep offshore farm waste is predicted to leave a larger, more continuous, but less severe ecological imprint than in shallow coastal seas.

Depending on the receiving seabed habitat, fish waste may modify the form and function of benthic faunal communities, especially their impact on sediment–seawater solute exchange, which connects benthic and pelagic ecosystem functions.

The Ph.D. student will conduct lab experiments to explore the impact of benthic invertebrates on sediment–seawater exchange of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus as a function of organic enrichment.
