AHRI/UCL 2023 PhD Studentship Awards for African Students

The AHRI/UCL PhD Studentship award covers tuition and living expenses for two candidates who wish to pursue a PhD at UCL. The award is funded by UCL’s Division of Infection and Immunity and is open to applicants who live in South Africa permanently.

The PhD research proposal must be in the field of Medical Sciences and/or Population Health. This includes everything from single molecules to cells and tissues to entire organisms and animal and human populations for improved global human health and well-being.

Students are expected to spend the majority of their time in South Africa conducting research at AHRI. Students will be expected to attend seminars, postgraduate club meetings, and other UCL doctoral student events while in London.

About the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI)

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is a multidisciplinary, independent research institute with two locations in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Our goal is to become a source of fundamental discoveries about the susceptibility, transmission, and treatment of HIV, tuberculosis, and other diseases. In addition, we are looking for ways to improve diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Scholarship Benefit

 The PhD studentships will fund:

- Sponsored Ads -

  • All fees for a three-year doctorate at UCL per year
  • Two round-trip economy air fares to and from SA to UK (per award)
  • Support for reasonable London living costs for up to one year
  • UCL bench fees

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be domiciled in South Africa at the time of application
  • Hold a letter of recommendation from a proposed supervisor at UCL*
  • Be working with AHRI already or hold an approved letter of support to complete a PhD at AHRI*
  • Be willing to stay in London for up to one year during their PhD studies. This time can be split into two periods of six months if required

  • Letter of recommendation from your proposed AHRI supervisor.
  • A letter of recommendation from your proposed UCL supervisor.
  • A copy of your academic curriculum vitae.
  • Original certificates and certified copies of your academic transcripts.
