The University of Geneva’s Faculty of Science is a globally acknowledged leader in research. This cutting-edge study spans astronomy, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, earth sciences, and the environment.
The Faculty is home to three highly competitive Swiss National Sciences Foundation National Centres of Competence in Research (Chemical Biology, SwissMAP, and Planets), as well as several European research programs.
The Masters of the Faculty of Science provide an excellent foundation for both academic and professional growth, with opportunities in industry, teaching, and administration in sciences, communication, and media… Master’s degrees are offered in either English or English and French (see the descriptions of each program).
With the assistance of external partners, the Faculty of Science has developed an Excellence Fellowship program accessible to excellent and highly motivated students who intend to pursue a Master of Science degree in one of the Faculty’s disciplines1. Excellence is used to pick candidates.

About the University of Geneva
The Geneva University (French: Université de Genève) is a public research university in Geneva, Switzerland. John Calvin created it in 1559 as a theological seminary and legal school. It remained primarily a theological institution until the 17th century, when it became a center for Enlightenment studies.
It abandoned its religious affiliations and became officially secular in 1873. By student population, the university is now the second-largest in Switzerland. The 450th anniversary of the University of Geneva was honored in 2009. At least 40% of the students are international.
Scholarship Benefit
- The scholarship is worth CHF 10,000-15,000 every year. It is granted for one year and is renewable for the regular term of the chosen Master’s course (three or four semesters) if the candidate is academically successful at the end of the first semester of studies.

Eligibility Criteria
- Open to students from any university who have excelled in their studies (belonging to the top 10% of their bachelor’s degree).
Documents Required for Application
The following materials must be included in the application (in English or French) as a SINGLE pdf file:
- A photocopy of your national identification card or passport.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) (2 pages maximum).
- The transcript of all tests passed during the bachelor’s education.
- A motivation letter in which you describe your specific scientific interests and why you want to study for a Master of Science at the University of Geneva.
- If feasible, letters of recommendation from two instructors attesting to your ability for this program (ideally given directly to Excellence-Master-Sciences(at)unige.ch).
- Any additional relevant information, such as GRE (General requirement examination), TOEFL, or other language test scores.

The application is submitted online beginning in January of each year. After registration, you will receive an email with a personal link to fill out the application form.
