About the Alvernia University
The Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis established an orphanage in the building now known as Francis Hall in 1926, and the orphanage eventually became an elementary school.
Beginning in 1958 as a college for the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters, the institution evolved into a four-year liberal arts college. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted Alvernia its charter in 1960.
Alvernia quickly welcomed female students from the laity, with the first male students enrolling in 1971. Since then, the University has expanded its educational offerings as well as its enrollment.
Alvernia’s student body has grown from 23 freshmen and eight sophomores in 1958 to nearly 3,000 students, both men and women, today. Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing are all available at Alvernia.
