2023 Playford Trust / GSA Scholarship at Flinders University

The Playford Trust, in collaboration with the South Australian Division of the Geological Society of Australia (GSA), annually awards a $5000 scholarship to a deserving student beginning a full-time Honours year in earth sciences at a South Australian public university.

GSA was founded in 1952 as a non-profit learned society to promote, advance, and support Earth Sciences in Australia. Members are drawn from the minerals and petroleum industries, government agencies, research and education institutions, and consulting firms.

About the Flinders University

Flinders University is a South Australian public university. It was named after navigator Matthew Flinders, who explored and surveyed the South Australian coastline in the early nineteenth century.

Flinders is a verdant university[citation needed] and a member of the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Group, ranking 10-16 in Australia and 36th in the world among those established less than 50 years. Academically, the university pioneered a multidisciplinary approach to education, and its faculties of medicine and humanities are among the top ten in the country.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be:

  • Ready to start full-time Earth science honours (or equivalent) degree from any of the three universities

     

  • An Australian or New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident visa holder who lives in South Australia

     

  • Intentionally intending to spend a significant portion of their career in South Australia, or likely to benefit the State

     

  • A high achiever with an outstanding undergraduate record

     

  • Characteristic of a good person. Students with demonstrated leadership potential will be given priority.

     

  • At the time of the award, they were members of the Geological Society of Australia (or had applied for membership).

 

The following criteria will also be considered, though students are not required to apply based on them.

  • Can demonstrate that they are considering further studies/research after completing their Honours degree

     

  • Can demonstrate how they intend to promote GSA and interact with society

     

  • Do not hold any other major industry-related scholarships at the same time.
