We are pleased to introduce the 2023 Western Michigan University (WMU) Global Education Merit Scholarship, which will be available to foreign students beginning in the Fall of 2023 and continuing.
WMU is proud of its long history of supporting foreign student achievement and well-being. We are one of just 50% of public colleges that grant an international student scholarship.
The WMU Global Education Merit Scholarship provides first-time overseas students with yearly scholarships of $5,000 based on merit (distributed at $2,500 for Fall and Spring semesters) for a maximum of four years (equal to 8 semesters for Fall and Spring semesters). The scholarship is exclusively for tuition.
The scholarship will help you succeed at WMU, which is one of the most inexpensive public research universities in the Midwest. The Haenicke Institute for Global Education’s Foreign Student and Scholar Services (I3S) at WMU connects international students to extra financial options like as on-campus work and other funding sources.

Eligibility Criteria
- Complete academic admission by March 1, 2023, with all application documents AND the necessary Personal Statement essay. There is no need for an extra application.
- Essay on Personal Statement (REQUIRED):*You must submit a one-page (maximum 500-word) typewritten essay together with your online application before the deadline. Please describe and emphasize your curricular and co-curricular achievements and activities that are relevant to your present objectives and ambitions at Western Michigan University and beyond in the essay.
- Undergraduate degree-seeking student enrolling at WMU for the first time after high school or transferring from another post-secondary institution for the FALL semester. Undergraduate degree route programs are included.
- International non-resident status.
- Intending F-1 SEVIS active full-time students to study in the US.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 (on a four-point scale)
Documents Required for Application
- Copy of passport identification page
- Proof of English language proficiency*
- Transcripts from all secondary and post-secondary schools attended or are attending, including diplomas, examination results, mark sheets and certificates*
- $100 non-refundable application fee
- Proof of sufficient funds for the first academic year of study at WMU according to estimated cost of attendance
