About Queen Mary University of London
Queen Mary College was formed in the 1800s to educate working-class Londoners. It began with the Draper’s Company-funded People’s Palace Technical Colleges in 1887. The People’s Palace, opened by Queen Victoria, included evening classes, a library, and reading rooms. Queen Mary’s mission is similar.
As a venue where people of different classes and conditions congregated, it promoted diversity. In 1896, the People’s Palace Technical Colleges became the East London Technical College, offering engineering and physics programs. It prepared pupils for Civil Service and London University exams.
East London College was renamed in 1905 to promote higher education in East London. Classes prepare students for college or a career. Queen Mary College remained a pioneering college with specific strengths in science and engineering, as shown by the teaching of Computer Science in 1968, the same year it received its first computer.
In 1980, Professor Sir Roy Goode founded the UK’s first Centre for Commercial Law Studies. The People’s Palace library was in Edward Robert Robson’s Octagon structure from 1887 until 1901. Inspired by the British Museum’s Reading Room, it’s used for exams, concerts, and graduations. King George VI opened the rebuilt People’s Palace in 1937.
