Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU), is set to host a world-class oil and gas research centre, thanks to the collaborative initiative by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Seplat Energy PLC.
This exciting development was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, during a courtesy visit by a combined team from NCDMB and Seplat to the university’s main campus on Thursday.
Expressing his gratitude, Professor Egwunyenga highlighted the significance of DELSU being selected as the host institution for the proposed research centre without having to solicit for it.
He noted that this selection underscores the university’s standing as the premier institution in Delta State.
DELSU is recognized as the best state university in the South-South and South-East regions, the fourth best state university in Nigeria, and ranks 18th among the 284 universities and research institutes in the country.
The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned that DELSU currently boasts thirteen faculties with eighty-three academic programmes, all fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the new oil and gas research centre will significantly boost the university’s contribution to national development through high-quality research and teaching. It will also help build the capacity of lecturers and expand the frontiers of excellence that DELSU is known for promoting.
Alhaji Abdulmalik Halilu, General Manager (Research and Statistics) of NCDMB and leader of the delegation, stated that the decision to establish the research centre at DELSU is part of NCDMB’s commitment to collaborating with a prominent university in the region.
He explained that the partnership aims to promote research, facilitate the patent registration of innovations, and develop the capacity of university researchers to attract research grants.
Alhaji Halilu expressed optimism that the collaboration would elevate DELSU’s global profile and enhance its effectiveness in research and teaching. He assured that NCDMB would take full responsibility for equipping and running the research centre, while DELSU would provide a suitable building for it.
Following the meeting, Professor Egwunyenga led the visitors around the campus to inspect potential buildings for the research centre. The team identified one of the inspected buildings as suitable and promised to commence work immediately.
