BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF THE DEPARTMENT OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION The degree programme in Technical Education started in 1987. The programme started with 20 students and five lecturers. The first set of 20 students graduated in 1990/1991 session. In 1992/1993 session, 22 students graduated with options in Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical and Automobile.
Seven students graduated in 1998/1999 session. Candidates who satisfied the degree requirements of the Faculty of Education were awarded B.Sc. (Ed) Technical Studies. Subsequently, the Department has been producing Technical Education graduates on yearly bases.

At inception, the Department of Home Economics and Technical Studies coordinated degree Programmes in Home Economics unit and Technical Studies unit. The Department also runs Postgraduate Degree in Industrial Technology Education.
PHILOSOPHY The curriculum of B.Sc. (Ed) Technical Education programme is designed to provide students with the intellectual and professional background adequate for teaching vocational skills necessary for industrial and economic development.
Also, it provides opportunities for students to undertake further studies in their areas of specialization. The Curriculum for Postgraduate is designed to provide students with intellectual and professional background as teachers in Vocational Technical skills and administrators for industrial and economic development. OBJECTIVES The objectives of the programme are as follows:
- To produce technology teachers who will be competent to teach technical education subjects at various school levels such as junior and senior secondary school, Technical Colleges. Polytechnics, College of Education-Technical, and Industrial based training schools.
- Produce technology teachers and instructors with high level skill in the design production and improvisation of various instructional technology resources.
- Train individuals who will acquire teaching skills and appropriate methods needed in imparting knowledge in their field of specializations.
- Gain insights on maintenance of industrial materials, tools, machines and facility.
- Training individuals to develop problem solving and creative thinking abilities.
- To enable individuals develop safety consciousness, creativity and good judgement over the use of technology.
- Train individuals who will help in training skilled and semi skilled technicians and craftsmen in an effort to meet the human resource needs of the society.
- Gain insights on maintenance of industrial materials, tools, machines and facility.
PROGRAMME DURATION AND STRUCTURE
The duration for the B.Sc. (Ed) programme in Technical Education is four academic years (eight semesters). During the first two years of study, the students are exposed to broad based courses in all the technical education subjects to enable them teach technology subjects in the secondary school. For the remaining two years (four semesters) students are required to concentrate on any of the following options:
- Construction Technology (Building/Woodwork)
- Electrical/Electronics,
