About the Harvard University

Harvard University was founded in 1636 by the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony by a resolution of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

It was named after the College’s first patron, the youthful clergyman John Harvard of Charlestown, who died in 1638 and bequeathed the College his library and half of his fortune.

Today, a monument of John Harvard sits in front of University Hall in Harvard Yard, and it is possibly the University’s most well-known landmark.

Scholarship Benefit

Stipend: Through the open call, there are two paths for applicants to be considered for the fellowship program: those who apply for financing from the Berkman Klein Center and those who apply with external funding.

  • Berkman Klein Center funding: The Center has a limited amount of funds to support fellows. Fellows nominated through the open call for applications are eligible for annual stipends of $75,000 from BKC. The first half of the stipend is guaranteed to last the entire year. We will undertake a mid-year review with fellows to offer input, review engagement, and check in on research progress, and if scholars are on track, we will clear the way for financing for the second half of the year at this time. We anticipate giving three fully supported scholarships in 2023-2024.
  • External funding: These applicants bring their own funding, such as a grant, a scholarship, a sabbatical, or something similar. The Berkman Klein Center will supplement this scholarship with a $10,000 stipend to cover housing, travel, and research expenses. We anticipate giving at least three externally supported fellowships in 2023-2024.

Eligibility Criteria

We invite applications from individuals whose work on the Internet and society intersects with existing work at the Berkman Klein Center and exposes our community to new opportunities and approaches. We encourage submissions from those who believe that a year as a fellow in our diverse community will help them accelerate their efforts and contribute to their continued personal and professional growth.

We encourage applications from researchers, practitioners, innovators, engineers, artists, and anyone who are dedicated to understanding and furthering the public good. Fellows come from a variety of disciplines and life experiences.

  • Some fellows are academics. We are looking for postdocs and professors for the academic year 2023-2024. Please keep in mind that we will not be accepting students into our fellowship cohort for the academic year 2023-2024. (We will spend the year focusing on various forms of programming to help Harvard students, and we may request submissions from students from other universities through other activities, such as our research sprints.)
  • Some fellows are practitioners who have made a name for themselves outside of academia, such as engineers, entrepreneurs, attorneys, policymakers, activists, journalists, educators, and others from a variety of fields and professions.
  • Many fellows wear numerous hats and pursue multiple interests at the intersections of their abilities. Fellows may be starting, restarting, pushing ahead, questioning, or turning from their current jobs.
  • We will prioritize and choose fellows for the 2023-2024 academic year who have a track record of contributing to public and scholarly dialogues in their field of study.
  • Fellows are dedicated to spending their fellowship in collaboration with others, led by a generous attitude, a critical eye, and a heap of love.

The fellowship selection process is a multifaceted blend of art and science, with factors unique to each candidate and the makeup of the whole fellowship class. Please see our FAQ for additional information on our selection process and considerations.

Applicants from other countries: We collaborate with the Harvard Foreign Office (HIO) to sponsor immigration applications for our international fellows who qualify. The HIO website provides an overview of the visa application procedure and requirements at: http://hio.harvard.edu/scholar-visa-process.
