About Howard University

Howard University (HU) is a privately funded historically black research institution in the United States of America which is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

HU provides more than 120 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees. Between 1986 and 2017, the school produced a Marshall Scholar, two Truman Scholars, four Rhodes Scholars, twenty-two Fulbright Scholars, and ten Pickering Fellows.

Howard Demographics

HU has always been renowned as a nonsectarian institution that welcomes people of all sexes and races. With a total undergraduate enrollment of 5,899 students, HU has a student population of almost 11,000 students.

With 86.1% of its student body African-American/Black, this historically black college (HBCU) is also home to a fast growing number of scholars from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, South, and Central America.

It includes students from all 50 states, with a regional distribution of 2% from New England and 8% from the Mid-West. South 22%, Mid-Atlantic 55%, and West 12%, with over 100 nations represented, with international students accounting for around 4% of the total student body.

HU also has a 33 percent male student to 67 percent female student gender distribution.

Howard Majors

Howard University’s academic year is semester-based. The university is made up of thirteen (13) schools and colleges, which include the following:

The College of Engineering and Architecture, the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, the College of Pharmacy, the Howard University University College of Arts and Sciences, the Howard University College of Dentistry, and the Howard University School of Business.

Howard University also has a School of Communications, a College of Medicine, a School of Law, a Middle School of Mathematics and Science, a School of Divinity, a School of Education, and a School of Social Work.

According to the official school website, Howard has given over 120,000 degrees and diplomas in the arts, sciences, and humanities since its inception in 1867.

With over 120 study areas available to undergraduates at the institution, the most popular majors based on the average number of graduates generated are: Biology (148), Parks, Recreation and Leisure Studies (137), and Communications (118).

Political Science and Government generated 92 graduates; Psychology created 86 graduates; Journalism produced 82 graduates; Business Support Services produced 59 graduates; Marketing produced 44 graduates; Health Care Management produced 43 graduates; and Finance produced 40 graduates.

Howard Ranking

U.S. News & World Report ranks Howard as a Tier 1 national university and second among HBCUs. It is ranked 110th among National Universities in the 2018 edition of Best Colleges by US News and World Reports.

It is ranked #2 among seventy-four HBCU institutions in the United States, #62 in High School Counselor Rankings, and #75 in Best Value Schools.

According to the Bloomberg Businessweek college rankings, Howard is the only HBCU placed in the top 75.

The Howard School of Business was also ranked first in prospects for minority students and among the top five for most competitive students by the Princeton Review.

The National Law Journal also placed Howard’s Law School as one of the top 25 in the country for placing graduates with the most successful law firm.

Howard Admissions, Acceptance Rate & Tuition

Howard University is a prestigious higher education school with a selective admissions policy.

HU has an average acceptance rate of 30%, with the incoming freshmen class admitting 6,616 (31%) of the 20,946 applications submitted for the fall of 2018. The rate of early acceptance is 43.7 percent. Students accepted to Howard have SAT scores ranging from 1040 to 1240, and ACT scores ranging from 22 to 28.

The University of Houston has a $685.8 million endowment. Tuition and fees after financial help for students receiving grants or scholarships average $25,697.

A few years ago, it was discovered that 1,270 (86%) of the 1,476 full-time freshmen registered in various programmes at the institution had financial problems. Howard could cover the entire financial support needs of 316 freshmen with these numbers.

When applying to Howard University, keep in mind that the standard decision application deadline is February 15, and the early decision date is November 1. Howard University’s application price is $45 with a Common Application fee waiver available for those experiencing severe financial hardship.

Howard Athletics and Football

The Bison and Lady Bison represent Howard University Athletics and is made up of 19 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s varsity sports.

The athletics programmes are affiliated with five conferences: the Mid-East Athletic Conference (MEAC), the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), the Sun Belt Conference, the Atlantic Sun Conference, and the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA).

In college football, Howard University is represented by the Howard Bison. As a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, they have represented in the NCAA Division I Football Championship under their traditional Navy Blue and White colours.

Since its inception in 1893, the 10,000-capacity William H. Greene Stadium has hosted five national championships and three conference championships. The Howard Bison have fierce rivalries with the football teams of Hampton, Morehouse, Morgan State, and Georgetown.

Howard Alumni

Among Howard University’s noteworthy alumni are Grammy Award-winning rapper Sean Combs, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president,  and acclaimed actor Chadwick Boseman.

This seemingly unending list of important persons includes Nobel laureates, sports celebrities, award-winning entertainers, and political leaders, particularly those representing black culture, such as Cheick Modibo Diarra, former Malian prime minister and NASA engineer.

Mike Espy, the first African-American Secretary of Agriculture; Walter Washington, former mayor of Washington, D.C.; Kasim Reed, Atlanta, Georgia’s 59th mayor; Ta-Nehisi Coates, writer and MacArthur Fellow;

Toni Morrison, Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize-winning author; Ron “Amen-Ra” Lawrence, Grammy Award-winning producer and writer; Taraji P. Henson, Oscar and Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress; Antoine Bethea, NFL player; and many others are among those honoured.
