With the climate problem, political tensions, and other emerging challenges, the age of cascading risk across and between organizations is here to stay. To thrive in this new era, governments and enterprises must be able to spot early warning signs of risk occurrences and act proactively to minimize those risks before they cause disruptions. To provide these capabilities now, a risk management program that combines data science, automation, and artificial intelligence will be required (AI).

This PhD project will investigate several methods to automation (e.g., rules-based, expert systems, recommender systems, machine learning) and evaluate their potential roles in risk management systems. It will also investigate how an operator’s risk appetite may be clarified and utilized to change and automate procedures in real-time.
