The University of Strathclyde is a public Scottish research university in Glasgow, Scotland. It is Glasgow’s second-oldest university, having been founded in 1796 as the Andersonian Institute.

Scholarship Benefits

The following financial assistance will be provided to successful applicants who apply for the Asylum Seeker Scholarship at the University of Strathclyde :

Tuition Fees

Allowance for Study
The award will include a study allowance to be used to reimburse necessary study-related expenses. Payments for books, equipment, and travel to and from the University will be included.

The award will continue to be made for the duration of the student’s course unless/until:

  • The student drops out of the course.
  • The student has finished the course.
  • The student completes the asylum and immigration appeals process and is no longer legally permitted to remain in the UK.
  • The student obtains Home Office status, which entitles them to SAAS, Student Finance England, Wales, or Northern Ireland assistance. In this case, the student’s fee waiver will expire when the government begins funding for fees.

Eligibility Criteria

Potential students’ applications will be considered if they:

  • hold a conditional or unconditional offer to study at the University of Strathclyde for the academic year 2023-2024 (starting in September); and
  • have applied to the Home Office for recognition as a Refugee under the 1951 United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees (hereafter “The Convention”) and have not yet received a final decision from the Home Office on that application; or
  • have been granted leave to remain in the UK under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, provided that the student is not eligible for Student Support from the relevant student funding body in Scotland, England, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

Housing costs are not covered by the scholarship, so applicants must live in the Glasgow area at the time of application. Prospective students from outside the Glasgow area will only be accepted if they provide written evidence of appropriate housing arrangements at the time of application.

Applications will also be considered from students who have already begun their studies but have since applied for asylum and are unable to access their original funding. In these cases, applicants will be required to provide supporting evidence to demonstrate that the original funding for study is no longer available.
