About the University

Harvard Institution is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based private Ivy League research university. It is the oldest school of higher learning in the United States and one of the most famous in the world, having been founded in 1636 as Harvard College and named for its first benefactor, the Puritan preacher John Harvard.

Harvard’s founding was approved by the Massachusetts colonial legislature, which was “afraid of leaving an illiterate ministry to the churches when our present ministers shall lie in the dust”; though never formally affiliated with any denomination, Harvard College primarily trained Congregational clergy in its early years.

During the 18th century, its curriculum and student population were gradually secularized, and by the 19th century, it had established itself as the dominant cultural establishment among Boston’s elite.

However, President Charles William Eliot’s long term (1869–1909) converted the college and its professional schools into a contemporary research university, and Harvard University became a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900.

Harvard University was led by James B. Conant through the Great Depression and World War II, and after the war, he liberalized admissions.

The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study is part of the university’s ten academic faculties.

Arts and Sciences offer to study in a broad range of academic areas for undergraduates and graduates, whereas the other schools provide only graduate degrees, usually professional.

Harvard University has the largest endowment of any academic institution, valued at $53.2 billion.

Furthermore, endowment income encourages undergraduate colleges to admit students regardless of financial need and to give ample financial aid without the need for loans.

The Harvard Library, which consists of 79 distinct libraries and holds over 20.4 million items, is the world’s largest university library system.
