About the University of Aberdeen
The University of Aberdeen is a public research university located in the Scottish city of Aberdeen. In 1495, William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen, petitioned Pope Alexander VI on behalf of King James IV of Scotland to establish King’s College, making it Scotland’s third-oldest university and the fifth-oldest in the English-speaking world.
In 1860, King’s College and Marischal College, a second institution founded in 1593 as a Protestant alternative to the former, merged to form the university as it exists today.
Aberdeen University is consistently listed among the top 200 universities in the world and is one of two universities in the city; the other is Robert Gordon University.
