About the University

The Institution of Ottawa is a public, bilingual research university located in Ottawa, Ontario, in the country of Canada.

The primary campus can be found on 42.5 hectares (105 acres) in the center of Ottawa’s Downtown Core, immediately close to the residential district of Sandy Hill, and directly adjacent to Ottawa’s Rideau Canal.

The university was founded in 1848 as the College of Bytown by Joseph-Bruno Guigues, the first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa.

The university was renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861 and achieved university status five years later by a royal charter after being placed under the leadership of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate.

Pope Leo XIII granted the University of Ottawa a papal charter on February 5, 1889, elevating the institution to the status of pontifical university.

Following that, on July 1, 1965, the university was restructured as a corporation, independent of any other body or religious institution.

As a result, the newly constituted Saint Paul Institution, which was amalgamated with the university, preserved the civil and pontifical charters. The reformed university then took charge of the other civil faculty.

The University of Ottawa is the world’s largest English-French bilingual university. The University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, the Telfer School of Management, and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Social Sciences all provide a wide range of academic degrees. The university’s Library has 12 branches with a collection of around 4.5 million titles. With a research income of CA$324.581 million in 2017, the University of Ottawa is a member of the Canadian U15 group of research-intensive universities.

Furthermore, the school is co-educational, with over 35,000 undergraduate and 6,000 post-graduate students enrolled. Around 7,000 international students from 150 countries attend the school, accounting for 17% of the student population. In addition, the university has a network of about 195,000 alumni. Its sporting teams, known as the Gee-Gees, compete in U Sports.
