A group of youthful girls who won awards for their invention of a problem-solving app to fight food hunger in Nigeria has inspired many people online.
The “AgriConnect” app was created by Goodness Nwonanne-Chima, 12, and Tiffany Tejiri Oghenemaro, 11, along with Excel Kiisibari Barile-Nwika and Salome Obehiremen Akhabhau, 11.
Known as the “Smarties,” these bright individuals announced that the app will link farmers, investors, and landowners so they can pool their resources and expertise to address food insecurity and encourage local food production in Nigeria.
The girls claim that their invention advances Goal 2 of the UN, which is to eradicate poverty and enhance food security and nutrition by 2030.
A farmer with experience but no land can connect with another farmer who lacks finance and land through the AgriConnect app. They can also locate financiers ready to fund projects related to agriculture.
“The investor brings the money to fund the farm, the farmer brings the skills and knowledge, and the landowner provides the land,” clarified Salome, one of the gifted schoolgirls. Ultimately, everyone gains from the farm in accordance with their agreed profit-sharing arrangement.
These young girls received the 2024 Technovation Girls competition’s Beginner Division finalist team award for their creative concept, which inspires females to pursue STEM education. The program, which offers special prizes in the areas of education, agriculture, and climate change, encourages young girls worldwide to use technology to solve environmental concerns.
The Nigerian preteens took home the Combat Hunger Award for agriculture, while schoolgirls from China and Poland took home prizes for education and climate change, respectively. As a result of their triumph, they are now eligible to play against other teams later this year in California, USA, one of the 15 global winners.
