About the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a private, federally and state-funded, self-governing national agency of German higher education institutions that represents 365 German higher education institutions (100 universities and technical universities, 162 general universities of applied sciences, and 52 colleges of music and art) [2003].

The DAAD does not provide study programmes or courses, but instead awards competitive, merit-based grants for study and/or research in Germany at any accredited German institution of higher education.

Scholarship Benefits

  • Depending on the level of education, monthly payments of
    • 861 euros for graduates
    • 1200 euros for doctoral candidates and postdocs
  • Contributions to health, accident, and personal liability insurance coverage

Eligibility Criteria

Excellently qualified doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists who have completed a Master’s degree or Diplom, or in exceptional cases, a Bachelor’s degree, by the time they begin their grant-supported research, or who have already completed a PhD. (postdocs).

Doctoral students completing their entire doctorate at a German university are not eligible to apply.

What conditions must be met?

  • Applicants should not have graduated more than six years prior to the application deadline. If you already have a doctorate, you should not have finished it more than four years ago. Doctoral candidates should not have begun their doctoral studies more than three years ago.
  • Applicants who have been in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of the application deadline will not be considered.

Note:

Other regulations apply to applicants in the fields of human medicine, veterinary medicine, and dentistry. Please see the leaflet “Additional information on DAAD Research Grants for Medical Field Applicants” (www.daad.de/extrainfo).

  • A 2nd class upper division Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts/Master of Science degree are required.
  • A Licence or Maitrise degree of “assez bien” level, as well as a DEA/DESS degree or a Master corresponding to the LMD system, are required for francophone countries.

Language abilities

  • The language level required is determined by the applicant’s study plans and subject: A working knowledge of German is usually required in the arts, social sciences, and law. Proof of good English language skills may also be accepted for natural sciences and engineering if English is spoken at the host institute.
