The University of Edinburgh’s Centre of African Studies is pleased to announce the availability of one full scholarship for suitable female African applicants to study for an MSc in Africa and International Development and subsequent PhD in African Studies or, where more suitable, to go straight into a PhD.
This scholarship has been designed to provide a combined package to allow those who do not believe they have enough research experience to pursue a PhD to obtain that grounding through an MSc. The MSc year serves as a bridge between undergraduate and PhD studies.
We hope that the combined package of support encourages those who may not have considered pursuing a PhD to reconsider. One of the scholarship’s main goals is to diversify the African scholars who contribute original and important research to African Studies.

About the University of Edinburgh
From Nobel laureates and Olympic champions to space explorers and prime ministers, the University of Edinburgh has had an impact on history since its doors first opened in 1583.
Following the 18th century Scottish Enlightenment, the University was positioned at the forefront of academia and critical thinking. Established facts about the world were being boldly and consistently challenged thanks to the determination and perseverance of a group of Edinburgh intellectuals.
Scholarships Benefits
In either case, the funding covers four years of assistance. The selected candidate will begin their studies in September 2022.
The Stephen Gordon Catto Charitable Trust has provided generous funding for this Scholarship. It will cover all fees as well as an annual stipend of £15,840 for the one-year MSc and the following three years of PhD study, or for the entire four years of PhD study.
Upfront funding of £4000 will also be provided to assist with the awardee’s UK visa application costs, travel costs to Edinburgh, and any other costs incurred prior to arrival in Edinburgh.
