The University of Edinburgh’s Centre of African Studies is pleased to announce the availability of one full scholarship for suitable female African applicants to study for an MSc in Africa and International Development and subsequent PhD in African Studies or, where more suitable, to go straight into a PhD.
This scholarship has been designed to provide a combined package to allow those who do not believe they have enough research experience to pursue a PhD to obtain that grounding through an MSc. The MSc year serves as a bridge between undergraduate and PhD studies.
We hope that the combined package of support encourages those who may not have considered pursuing a PhD to reconsider. One of the scholarship’s main goals is to diversify the African scholars who contribute original and important research to African Studies.

About the University of Edinburgh

Scholarships Benefits
In either case, the funding covers four years of assistance. The selected candidate will begin their studies in September 2022.
The Stephen Gordon Catto Charitable Trust has provided generous funding for this Scholarship. It will cover all fees as well as an annual stipend of £15,840 for the one-year MSc and the following three years of PhD study, or for the entire four years of PhD study.
Upfront funding of £4000 will also be provided to assist with the awardee’s UK visa application costs, travel costs to Edinburgh, and any other costs incurred prior to arrival in Edinburgh.
Eligibility Criteria
- Identify as women, including cis and trans people, as well as non-binary or gender fluid people who identify as women or female and are normally domiciled in one of the African countries listed here.
- Have an excellent undergraduate degree in the social sciences (minimum of a high 2.1) from an accredited African university (a Masters degree achieved with distinction will be an advantage for those wishing to go directly into a PhD).
- Not previously hold a degree from a university outside of Africa (with the exception of current or former students of The University of Edinburgh).
- Demonstrate dedication to pursuing a PhD in African Studies.
- Demonstrate leadership potential (broadly defined) and a desire to maximize the impact of their research.
- Have applied to the University of Edinburgh to study for the MSc in Africa and International Development and/or the PhD in African Studies by 15 April 2022.
Because one of the scholarship’s primary goals is to diversify the African continent’s scholars who contribute original and important research to African Studies, this scholarship is only open to scholars who are normally domiciled in African countries.
Those studying conflict resolution, elections, technology, peace building, gender, and/or governance in African contexts will be given priority, though the selection panel may consider other areas of politics and international development.

- A cover letter outlining your motivations and plans for the future (maximum 1 page).
