Scholarship Overview

Eligibility

1. Citizenship: You must be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States. International students or visa holders who are not permanent residents are not eligible.
2. Geographic requirement: You must live in one of the eligible counties listed below. JETAANC serves Nevada and the 48 northernmost counties of California. Students living in counties south of this boundary do not qualify.
3. Academic status: You must currently be a high school senior. You must be in the process of enrolling full-time in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university, beginning in the Fall semester immediately after receiving the award. Students who have already enrolled in university are not eligible.
4. Interest in Japan: You must demonstrate a sincere and sustained interest in Japan or Japanese culture. This must be supported by at least one year of directed study or related activity. This does not have to be Japanese language study specifically, but it must be verifiable and meaningful.
5. Financial need: While not a hard requirement, demonstrated financial need may be taken into consideration by the selection committee during evaluation.

Eligible Counties

This scholarship is geographically restricted. You must reside in one of the following areas to be eligible.

1. California (eligible counties): Monterey, Kings, Tulare, Inyo, and all California counties north of these. This covers the 48 northernmost counties of the state.
2. California (excluded counties): San Luis Obispo, Kern, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial counties are specifically excluded. Students in these counties are not eligible.

Note: This scholarship is open only to residents of the above areas. It is not open to students outside the United States or outside the JETAANC geographic service area.

Eligible Fields of Study

This scholarship is open to all fields of study.

You do not need to be pursuing a degree in Japanese studies, Asian studies, or any Japan-related discipline. What matters is that you can demonstrate a personal and sustained interest in Japan or Japanese culture, regardless of the subject you plan to study at university.

Benefits

The JETAANC Scholarship provides the following:

1. Academic award: Up to $3,500 will be awarded to the selected recipient. This is a one-time, non-renewable scholarship, meaning it is awarded once and does not continue into subsequent years of study.
2. Direct institutional payment: Funds are sent directly to your attending college or university. You will not receive the money personally. The funds are applied toward your tuition or institutional fees for the fall term.
3. Disbursement timeline: Payment to the institution is made in June, in time for the fall term beginning shortly after.

What is not included: The scholarship does not cover living expenses, textbooks, travel, accommodation, or health insurance. It is a contribution toward tuition costs only.

How to Apply

Follow each step carefully and in order. Rushing through the process or skipping steps is one of the most common reasons applications are unsuccessful.

Step 1: Confirm your eligibility. Check that you are a US citizen or permanent resident, currently a high school senior, living in an eligible California or Nevada county, and able to demonstrate at least one year of interest in Japan through study or activity.

Step 2: Gather evidence of your interest in Japan. Identify the activities, courses, programmes, cultural events, or experiences that reflect your genuine engagement with Japan or Japanese culture over the past year or more. You will need to articulate this clearly in your essay.

Step 3: Request your letters of recommendation early. Ask two teachers, school administrators, or professional supervisors who know you well and can speak to your academic character and your interest in Japan. Make sure they write on official letterhead and give them enough time before the April 19 deadline.

Step 4: Obtain your recent academic transcripts. Request an official copy from your high school in advance. Allow time for processing, especially if your school requires advance notice for transcript requests.

Step 5: Write your application essay. Read the essay prompts carefully on the official application form. Address each question thoroughly and honestly. Your essay should reflect your genuine connection to Japan, your academic goals, and any leadership or community involvement.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for the JETAANC Scholarship 2026 is April 19, 2026.

Important Tips

1. Start your application as soon as it opens on March 9, 2026. The April 19 deadline may feel distant, but gathering transcripts, requesting recommendation letters, and writing a strong essay takes far more time than most students expect.
2. Ask for recommendation letters at least three to four weeks before the deadline. Give your referees enough time to write a thorough and specific letter. A rushed letter on your behalf can weaken an otherwise strong application.
3. Be specific and honest in your essay. The committee reads many applications. A personal, specific account of how and why you developed your interest in Japan will stand out over a generic or vague response.
