About Hydro Science and Engineering at Technische Universitat Dresden

The Hydro Science and Engineering Scholarship aspires to be the best in the world in dealing with all aspects of water. Every student will be equipped to handle future professional demands for internal research and practice around the world.

Students from developing and transitional countries are targeted in particular by the Hydro Science and Engineering Scholarship. This is due to the fact that these countries face a unique set of challenges, such as a scarcity of potable water and raw water resources, as well as the devastating effects of hydrologic extremes, such as droughts or flood disasters connected with heavy erosion. The scholarship was established to help students from these countries overcome these challenges.

In addition, the Hydro Science and Engineering Scholarship is compliant with international standards, which are necessary in order to pursue and grow professions within national and worldwide administrations and organizations. This fellowship will establish the groundwork for participation in development and consultative agencies, allow the recipient to head the operation of water management systems, and contribute to transdisciplinary research activities within the entire field of hydro sciences.

On the other hand, students from China, Indonesia, Nepal, and Germany signed up for the class when it was offered for the very first time during the winter semester of 2004/2005. Students from China, Uganda, Sudan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Brazil, Greece, Spain, and Kazakhstan were among those that enrolled in Germany’s master’s program during the winter semester of 2006-2007. Due to the high visibility of the program as well as its positive reputation on a worldwide scale, the number of applicants has consistently increased over the course of its history. In most cases, the class will begin with approximately 20 international participants, who together account for sixty to eighty percent of all students registered for the course.

The decision to change the university’s name to the current one, Technische Universitat Dresden, was made by the government of the GDR on October 5, 1961. (Latin: Universitas litterarum et technicarum Dresdensis ). Kurt Schwabe was the first person to hold the position of university rector. During that time, there were approximately eight faculties with a total enrollment of 10,741 students, of which just 4% were international students.

During this time, efforts were undertaken to establish aircraft construction in the GDR using the 152 aircraft prototype that was constructed in Dresden. These efforts were unsuccessful. Brunolf Baade, a senior engineer at the company, was permitted to carry on with his fundamental research when the testing were stopped at the end of the 1950s so that he could take over as director of the Institute for lightweight construction at the university.

In addition, in 1968, as part of the third higher education reform in the GDR, the historical organization of the faculties was all but obliterated, and in its stead, 22 newly constructed sections with scientific fields and institutions were established.

The newly established Scientific Council was tasked with overseeing the bestowing of doctorates, honorary doctorates, and research accomplishments. This was accomplished through the establishment of faculties within the Scientific Council. Lieselott Herforth, a nuclear physicist and the first woman to hold the position of rector at a German university, oversaw the implementation of the higher education reform that was improved at the government level. Herforth was also the first person to hold the position of rector at a German university.

The Engineering College Dresden (IHD) merged with the Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) in 1986. This merger, along with TU Dresden’s Section 8 – Computer Science, formed the computer science center of the higher education system in the GDR. From this center, the Faculty of Computer Science emerged at the end of 1990.
