The Road to Research Scholarship is a generous funding opportunity offered by Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, to support both domestic and international students undertaking the Master of Research (MRes) programme starting in Session 2, July 2026. The scholarship provides a living allowance stipend of $39,700 per year alongside a full tuition fee offset for up to one year of study, making it one of the more comprehensive research scholarships available at the postgraduate level in Australia. For students who want to build a strong foundation in research methodology and pursue a career in academic or applied research, this scholarship removes two of the biggest financial barriers at once.
This scholarship is open to both domestic Australian students and international students, provided they are physically present in Australia at the time of application and plan to reside in Sydney throughout their candidature. It is particularly well-suited to students who are currently completing a Macquarie postgraduate coursework degree in Session 1 2026, though other eligible applicants are also welcome to apply. The key requirements are academic merit, a confirmed or prospective supervisor from Macquarie, and meeting the admission criteria for the MRes programme.
This post covers every detail you need to know: full eligibility criteria, which students are and are not eligible, a complete breakdown of the benefits, required documents, a step-by-step application guide, the key deadline, and answers to the most commonly asked questions. Read through carefully before the 30 April 2026 deadline and submit your application as early as possible.

HOW TO APPLY
Follow these steps carefully to apply for the Road to Research Scholarship at Macquarie University:
Step 1: Confirm You Are Currently in Australia This is the first and most fundamental step. Confirm that you are physically present in Australia at the time of application and that you hold a valid visa permitting full-time study that remains valid until at least the end of 2027.
Step 2: Check Your Visa Type If you are an international student, confirm that your visa type qualifies for this scholarship. Holders of Subclass 485, 600, 601, and 995 visas are explicitly excluded if those visas expire before the end of 2027 and require you to go offshore to renew. Check your visa expiry date and subclass carefully before applying.
Step 3: Meet with a Potential Supervisor Before or during your application, identify and contact a Macquarie University researcher who is eligible to supervise your MRes project. If you are applying through the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, a confirmed supervisor is compulsory. For all other faculties, having one significantly strengthens your application.
Step 4: Prepare Your Research Proposal Develop a clear and focused research proposal or project outline that aligns with the interests of your prospective supervisor and the MRes programme.
Step 5: Apply for Admission to the MRes Submit your application for admission to the Macquarie Master of Research for Session 2 2026 (July 2026 start). Your scholarship application is linked to your admission application.
Step 6: Gather Your Academic Records Collect your official transcripts and degree certificates. Make sure your Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or GPA is clearly documented. If you graduated before 2020 or from a non-Macquarie institution, your grades will be assessed as a GPA. Overseas qualifications will be assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) using Australian Government guidelines.
Step 7: Complete and Submit the Online Application Complete your online application through the Macquarie University scholarship or research portal. Make sure every section is filled in accurately and completely. Incomplete applications will be withdrawn automatically and cannot be carried over to a future round.
Step 8: Submit Before 30 April 2026 at 11:00pm AEST Submit your completed application no later than 30 April 2026 at 11:00pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. Macquarie strongly encourages early submission. Do not wait until the last day.

Applications submitted after this time will NOT be accepted. Macquarie University also states clearly that incomplete applications will be withdrawn and cannot be held over to a future scholarship round. If you miss this deadline, you will need to reapply in the next available round.
Submit your application as early as possible. Early submission is strongly recommended by the university and avoids any risk of last-minute technical failures or missing documentation.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The Road to Research Scholarship uses a merit-based selection process. The university will assess applications using the following criteria:
- Academic Merit (Primary Criterion): Macquarie University ranks all eligible candidates on the basis of their Weighted Average Mark (WAM). For students who graduated before 2020 or from institutions other than Macquarie, the Grade Point Average (GPA) will be used instead. Scholarships are awarded to the top-ranked applicants. This means academic performance is the single most important factor in selection.
- Overseas Qualification Assessment: For international applicants who completed their degrees outside Australia, Macquarie will assess the comparability of your qualifications to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) using Australian Government guidelines. The assessed equivalent ranking will be used in the overall merit ranking.
- Supervision Confirmation: For FMHHS applicants, a confirmed supervisor is a compulsory requirement before a scholarship can be awarded. For all other faculties, having supervision confirmed before submission is strongly encouraged and demonstrates readiness to commence research.
- Visa and Residency Eligibility: Only applicants who meet all visa and onshore residency requirements will be considered for ranking. Those who do not meet these conditions will be excluded from the selection pool entirely.
- Application Completeness: Incomplete applications are automatically withdrawn. Only fully completed applications will be ranked and considered for the award.
IMPORTANT TIPS
- Submit early. Macquarie explicitly encourages early submission. Submitting days or weeks before the 30 April 2026 deadline gives you time to fix any issues and shows the university that you are a prepared and organised candidate.
- Focus on your WAM or GPA. Selection is based on academic ranking. If your WAM or GPA is high, your chances are strong. Make sure your academic records are accurately and clearly presented in your application. Any errors in how your grades are represented could affect your ranking.
- Secure your supervisor before applying. Even if you are not in FMHHS, having a confirmed supervisor gives your application a significant advantage. Reach out to Macquarie researchers whose work aligns with your interests as early as possible. A brief, well-prepared email explaining your background and research interest is the best way to start that conversation.
- Check your visa expiry date carefully. This scholarship excludes applicants whose visas expire before the end of 2027 and who need to go offshore to renew them. Before applying, confirm that your visa type and expiry date make you eligible. If in doubt, contact Macquarie’s international student services team.
- Do not apply if you are currently enrolled in a Macquarie graduate research programme. Current Macquarie research students, including Graduate Diploma of Research students, are explicitly excluded. If you are in this category, look into other funding options available at Macquarie.
- Get your overseas transcripts assessed early. If you completed your qualifications outside Australia, your grades will be assessed against the AQF using Australian Government guidelines. Understanding how your international qualifications will be converted ensures there are no surprises during the ranking process.
- Make your research proposal focused and feasible. While the selection is primarily merit-based, a strong, well-defined research proposal signals to your prospective supervisor and the university that you are ready to begin research immediately. Clarity and specificity matter.
- Plan your finances beyond the scholarship. The scholarship provides tuition fees and a $39,700 stipend, but it does not cover health insurance, visa fees, or travel. Make sure you have planned for these additional costs before committing to the programme.
