HOW TO APPLY
Follow these steps to apply for the Birkbeck International Excellence Scholarship:
Step 1: Apply to Birkbeck First You cannot apply for this scholarship without first holding an unconditional offer from Birkbeck. If you have not yet applied to Birkbeck, visit birkbeck.ac.uk and apply for your chosen full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programme for autumn 2026 entry. Your academic application must be processed and converted to an unconditional offer before you can proceed with the scholarship application.
Step 2: Confirm Your Eligibility Once you have your unconditional offer, confirm that you meet all scholarship eligibility criteria: you are classified as an overseas fee payer, you are self-funded, you are a first-time Birkbeck student, and you are ordinarily resident in an eligible country (or are an international student living in the UK).
Step 3: Choose the Correct Application Form There are two separate application forms depending on your circumstances:
- If you are an international student currently living in the United Kingdom, use the UK International applicant form
- If you are living in one of the listed eligible countries outside the UK, use the form for applicants from other eligible countries
Both forms are available on the official Birkbeck scholarship page.
Step 4: Write Your Personal Statement Prepare a personal statement of no more than 2,000 words. This is the most important part of your application. The statement must be written entirely by you, in line with Birkbeck’s AI guidance, and must explain clearly and compellingly why you are the ideal candidate for this scholarship. Do not use AI tools to write or paraphrase your statement, as this goes against Birkbeck’s explicit guidance and could disqualify your application.
Step 5: Gather Evidence of Funding Provisions Prepare documentation showing that you have provisions in place to cover the remaining tuition fees beyond what the scholarship will provide. This might include a bank statement, a signed financial declaration, or a sponsor letter from a family member.
Step 6: Submit Your Application Before Your Target Deadline Round Select the deadline round that suits your timeline:
- Round 1: 17 May 2026 at 11:59pm UK time
- Round 2: 21 June 2026 at 11:59pm UK time
- Round 3: 19 July 2026 at 11:59pm UK time
- Round 4: 16 August 2026 at 11:59pm UK time
Submit your completed online application form before the end of your chosen round. You do not need to reapply in later rounds if you submitted in an earlier one.
Step 7: Wait for the Outcome Notification After each deadline, you should receive notification within 20 days if your application has been successful. If you have not heard back within 20 days, consider that your application was not successful for that round.
Step 8: Accept the Award and Pay the Visa Deposit (if applicable) If you receive a conditional award, respond promptly. If you are applying for a Student Visa, you must pay the non-refundable Student Visa deposit within the timeframe stated in your award letter, typically five to seven working days.
Step 9: Enrol at Birkbeck by 6 September 2026 To receive the scholarship, you must successfully enrol for the autumn 2026 intake no later than 6 September 2026. Failure to enrol by this date will result in the scholarship being cancelled in full.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The Birkbeck International Excellence Scholarship selection is based on the following:
- Personal Statement Quality: The personal statement of up to 2,000 words is the primary basis for selection. The committee will assess how clearly and compellingly you explain why you are the ideal candidate for the scholarship. Generic, poorly structured, or AI-generated statements will not be competitive.
- Demonstration of Financial Need and Provisions: Applicants must show that they have provisions to fund the remainder of their tuition fees. Those who can clearly demonstrate this are more likely to be considered serious and prepared candidates.
- Authenticity of Writing: Birkbeck has specifically stated that the statement must be written entirely by the candidate in line with Birkbeck’s AI guidance. The use of AI tools to generate or substantially paraphrase the statement is not permitted and may result in disqualification.
- Academic Merit: While specific academic thresholds are not stated for the scholarship itself, holding an unconditional offer from Birkbeck already implies a level of academic achievement. The committee may consider the strength of your academic profile alongside your personal statement.
- Commitment to Study at Birkbeck: Candidates who clearly articulate why they have chosen Birkbeck, what they hope to gain from the experience, and how the scholarship will make a meaningful difference to their ability to study will stand out from more generic applications.
IMPORTANT TIPS
- Apply for your Birkbeck programme as early as possible. You cannot apply for this scholarship without holding an unconditional offer. Start your academic application now so that you have your offer in hand well before Round 1 closes on 17 May 2026.
- Target Round 1 if at all possible. Applying in the first round gives the selection committee the most time to consider your application and gives you the most time to arrange your finances and visa if you are successful. Earlier applicants may also have a competitive advantage simply by virtue of being among the first assessed.
- Put real effort into your personal statement. The 2,000-word statement is the heart of your application. Spend at least a week drafting, revising, and refining it. Ask a trusted friend, teacher, or mentor to read it and give you honest feedback before you submit.
- Do not use AI to write your statement. Birkbeck explicitly states that the statement must be written entirely by the candidate in line with their AI guidance. Using AI tools to generate or rewrite your statement is a violation of the scholarship rules and could result in your application being disqualified.
- Be specific about why Birkbeck. Vague statements about wanting to study in the UK will not stand out. Research Birkbeck’s specific strengths, programmes, research culture, and evening study model, and explain in precise terms why this institution is the right fit for your goals.
- Check whether your country has programme-level restrictions. Brazil and Canada are eligible for undergraduate programmes only, not postgraduate. If you are from either of these countries and are applying for a postgraduate programme, you are not eligible for this scholarship. Confirm your eligibility before applying.
- Prepare your proof of funding before you apply. The scholarship requires you to demonstrate provisions for the remainder of your tuition fees. Gather your financial documentation in advance so that it is ready to submit or present when required during the process.
- Monitor your email closely after each deadline. Birkbeck will notify successful candidates by email. If you have not heard within 20 days of the deadline, consider your application unsuccessful for that round and continue planning your finances accordingly.
