Americas: Open to students from North America, South America, and the Caribbean currently studying in Germany.

Eligible Fields of Study

This scholarship is open to all fields of study. Students from any academic discipline may apply, provided they meet the other eligibility criteria. There are no restrictions based on subject area, and artistic programmes are also supported.

Note: Pure study abroad programmes outside the European Union are not funded under this scholarship.

Benefits

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Scholarship is fully funded and offers the following benefits:

Monthly Stipend:

• Bachelor’s, Diploma, Magister, or State Examination students receive 750 euros per month.
• Master’s students receive 992 euros per month.
• PhD students (international) receive 1,500 euros per month.

Health Insurance:

• Health insurance costs are covered for all scholarship recipients.
• Doctoral students also receive a subsidy specifically for statutory health insurance.

Family and Child Allowances:

• Scholarship recipients with children receive an additional 160 euros per month (for bachelor’s and master’s level).
• Doctoral scholars with a child receive a family allowance of 276 euros per month.

Required Documents

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung application is a two-stage process. Initial documents are minimal, but additional documents are requested if you pass the first stage.

Stage One (Online Application):

1. Completed online application form (available on the official website)
2. Background information about your professional and family history (entered directly in the form)

Stage Two (Requested by FES if shortlisted): 

1. Two expert reports from university professors (or two reports from high school/vocational school teachers for first-year students in their first semester) 
2. Information about your previous education

How to Apply

Step 1: Review the eligibility requirements carefully. Confirm that you are enrolled at or admitted to a state-recognised higher education institution in Germany and that you meet the language and academic requirements.

Step 2: Choose the correct application form for your situation. FES provides different sample application forms for first-year students, bachelor’s/diploma/magister/state examination students, and doctoral students. Step 3: Visit the official Friedrich Ebert Stiftung website and open the online application portal. No documents are needed at this first stage.

Step 4: Complete the online application. You will be asked about your professional background, your family background, and your motivations. Answer each question honestly and thoughtfully. This is your first impression.

Step 5: Demonstrate your commitment to social democratic values. Be specific about how your studies and career goals connect to equality, social justice, and democratic participation. Vague answers will not stand out.

Step 6: Submit the completed online application before the relevant deadline for your degree level and semester.

Step 7: Wait for FES to review your application. If you meet the eligibility criteria, they will contact you by email requesting further documents, including two expert reports from professors or teachers.

Step 8: Gather and upload the requested documents within three weeks of the email request. If you need more time for the expert reports, contact FES to request an extension of up to six weeks.

Step 9: If your documents are approved, you will be invited to a subject-related interview with a faculty advisor. Prepare thoroughly for this interview by reviewing the preparation tips available on the FES website.

Step 10: If you pass the first interview, you will be invited to a second interview with a member of the selection committee. Travel expenses for both interviews are reimbursed.

Step 11: After both interviews, your full application is presented at a selection committee meeting. These meetings take place eight to ten times a year. You will receive a final decision no later than one week after the relevant meeting.

Step 12: If accepted, follow the onboarding instructions from FES to begin receiving your stipend and to register for the seminar programme.

• Master’s students applying for the summer semester: May 31, 2026
• Master’s students applying for the winter semester: November 30, 2026
• Bachelor’s, Diploma, Magister, and State Examination students: Apply after completing your first semester, and no later than three semesters before the end of your standard study period.

1. Understand the values of the Foundation before you apply. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation is rooted in social democracy.
