The Society of Women Engineers Golden Gate Section (SWE-GGS) Scholarship is a meaningful financial award designed to support young women and gender-diverse students taking their first steps into engineering education. Offered annually by the Bay Area chapter of one of the world’s leading professional organisations for women in engineering, this scholarship provides between $1,000 and $2,000 to help cover the costs of pursuing a degree in engineering or computer science. For a student just starting college, this kind of support at the right moment can make a real difference.
This scholarship is specifically for students in the Bay Area of California who identify as women, non-binary, or gender non-conforming. It targets two groups: high school seniors who will be entering college as freshmen in Fall 2026, and students currently attending community college who plan to continue into a four-year engineering or computer science programme. If you are in either of these groups and live or study within the Golden Gate Section boundaries, this could be a strong opportunity for you.
This post covers everything you need to know before applying, including full eligibility requirements, the documents you will need, a step-by-step application guide, essay tips, key dates, and answers to the most common questions from applicants.

Prepare all documents before starting the application. Everything is submitted through a Google Form. Use this file naming format for all uploaded documents:
LastName_FirstName_DocumentName
Example: Doe_Jane_SWEGGSAPP
- Completed application form (submitted via the Google Form)
- School transcript (current, official or unofficial as accepted)
- Resume or summary of activities, including duration of involvement, weekly time commitment, and whether each activity is voluntary or paid
- Contact details for two references (name and email address), with letters collected directly by SWE-GGS from your referees
- Required essay (500 to 1,000 words, see prompts below)
- Optional second essay (maximum 500 words, expanding on any part of your application or financial background)
- Financial information (optional but encouraged): annual household income, anticipated expenses for the coming year, and sources of income
Note on reference letters: You do not submit the letters yourself. SWE-GGS will contact your references directly using the email addresses you provide. Make sure your references are aware and available before the April 3rd deadline. Do not submit your application at the last minute.
How to Apply
Follow each step carefully. Incomplete applications or incorrectly named documents may affect your chances.
Step 1: Confirm your eligibility. Check that you identify as a woman or gender-diverse individual, are a current high school senior or community college student, and live or study within the SWE-GGS boundary zip codes. If you are unsure about your zip code, email sweggs.scholarship@gmail.com before proceeding.
Step 2: Gather your school transcript. This should reflect your current academic performance. Check whether an unofficial copy is acceptable or if an official copy is required
Step 3: Prepare your resume or activity summary. List every extracurricular activity, job, internship, or community role. Include how long you have been involved, your weekly time commitment, and whether the activity is paid or unpaid.
Step 4: Identify two references. Choose people who know you professionally, such as a teacher, coach, employer, or mentor. Avoid family members. Contact them in advance to confirm they are willing and available to write a letter before April 3rd, 2026.
Step 5: Write your required essay (500 to 1,000 words). Use this prompt: describe why you want to be an engineer or related professional, what your goals are, and why you believe you deserve this scholarship. Be specific and genuine.
Step 6: Write your optional second essay (up to 500 words) if you want to expand on your financial situation or any other part of your application that needs more context. This is a strong opportunity to make a case for financial need.
Step 7: Gather your financial information if you choose to include it. This includes your annual household income, anticipated expenses for the coming year (tuition, housing, books, etc.), and all income sources such as employment, other scholarships, or family support.
Step 8: Name all your documents correctly using the required format: LastName_FirstName_DocumentName. Example: Doe_Jane_Essay1.
Step 9: Review the example application documents available on the official SWE-GGS scholarship page. Use them to benchmark your own resume and essay before submitting.
Step 10: Open the Google Form application portal (available from December 1st, 2025) and complete all required fields. Upload your documents and submit before 11:59 PM on April 3rd, 2026.
Step 11: After submitting, confirm that your two references have received an outreach email from SWE-GGS and are preparing their letters. Follow up with your references if necessary.

Selection Criteria
SWE-GGS evaluates applicants on a combination of merit and, optionally, financial need. The following factors influence the selection decision:
- Passion for engineering: Your essay should clearly communicate your motivation for choosing engineering or a related field. Generic or vague answers will not stand out. The committee wants to see genuine enthusiasm and a clear sense of direction.
- Career goals and vision: Applicants who can articulate specific goals within their engineering career are more competitive. Think beyond “I want to be an engineer” and describe what kind of engineer you want to be and what impact you hope to have.
- Academic performance: Your school transcript is reviewed as part of the evaluation. Strong grades in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects are likely to be an advantage.
- Extracurricular involvement and leadership: Your activity summary is evaluated for breadth and depth of involvement. Quality of engagement matters more than length of the list. Leadership roles, sustained commitment, and initiative are viewed positively.
- Financial need (optional but considered): Although financial information is optional, including it gives the committee context for evaluating your need. Students from low-income households who provide this information may be given additional consideration.
- Quality of references: Your references should be people who can speak directly to your abilities, work ethic, and character in a professional or academic context.
Important Tips
- Contact your references early. SWE-GGS collects letters directly from your referees, which means your references need to respond promptly. Give them several weeks of notice and follow up to confirm they received the outreach email from SWE-GGS.
- Verify your zip code before applying. The location boundary is a firm requirement. If there is any doubt about whether your address qualifies, email the Scholarship Chair before you invest time in your application.
- Use the example application. SWE-GGS provides example documents for the activity summary and essay. Review them carefully to understand the standard expected. Many applicants skip this resource and miss out on useful guidance.
- Be specific in your essay. The required essay asks three things: why you want to be an engineer, what your goals are, and why you deserve this scholarship. Answer all three directly. Avoid vague statements like “I have always loved science.” Use concrete examples from your life.
- Take the optional essay seriously. If you have financial need or if any part of your application needs further explanation, the optional second essay is your chance. Scholarship committees appreciate transparency, and this section can meaningfully strengthen your case.
- Name your files correctly. The application requires a specific naming format: LastName_FirstName_DocumentName. An incorrectly named file may cause confusion or delays. Double-check every document before uploading.
- Submit at least one week before the deadline. This gives you a buffer if technical issues arise with the Google Form, and it ensures your references have enough time to respond before the deadline.
- Include all activity details in your resume. For every activity listed, note how long you have been involved, how many hours per week you commit, and whether it is paid or voluntary. Missing these details makes your application harder to evaluate.
- Be honest about financial need. If your household income is low or you are covering significant expenses, include that information. This scholarship takes financial background into account, and omitting it when it applies to you may put you at a disadvantage.
