Amaka Ifeduba, a Nigerian scholar who was diagnosed with cancer the year she started her doctoral studies at Texas A&M University, overcame tremendous obstacles to obtain a perfect 4.00/4.00 CGPA and a PhD in Plant Breeding. Even though she was diagnosed in September 2022, Amaka chose to follow her vocation despite the challenges, delaying surgery to speak at a conference after being awarded by Corteva Agriscience. She turned to her mentor and friends for support after undergoing major surgery in October, and a few weeks later, she returned to online classes, refusing to postpone her education in order to preserve her mental health.
She joined the top 2% of PhD holders worldwide, completed all of her classes, and successfully defended her dissertation early thanks to her perseverance and commitment.
Amaka shared her story to inspire others, emphasizing the importance of staying positive, even in life’s toughest moments.
