When Rajo Devi Lhan became the world’s first woman, or should I say the world’s oldest first-time mother, a lot of people (including health experts) believed she was actually putting her health at risk.

According to a recent source, she delivered birth after undergoing in vitro fertilization.

Let’s not go into too much detail about how it happened, but she’s in the game.

Annegret Raunigk

Annegret Raunigk is the oldest woman to give birth to quadruplets.

Raunigk is already a single mother with 13 children (from five different fathers), and the quadruplets boost her total to 17.

Doctors in Germany declined to provide Raunigk with IVF treatments because they were concerned that her body would not be able to withstand the burden of having more children.

Yet, a Ukrainian doctor agreed to artificially inseminate Raunigk.

When confronted with criticism and charges that she is selfish and insane, Raunigk maintains firm in her decisions, stating that everyone “should live as they like.”

4. Elizabeth Adeney

Elizabeth Adeney

Elizabeth Adeney is the oldest woman in the United Kingdom to have given birth.

Adeney’s son was born on May 28, 2009, at the age of 66.

Adeney flew all the way to Ukraine for IVF treatments in order to fulfill her ambition of having a child, as UK clinics do not serve women beyond the age of 50.

Adeney, a divorcee, tried IVF procedures for the first time when she was still in her 40s and still married to her spouse.

But, those rounds of IVF failed, and physicians informed her she was too old to attempt again.

Adeney’s marriage failed due of her strong desire to have children.

Bhateri Devi Singh gave birth to triplets in 2010 at the age of 66.

Singh had the babies after having IVF procedures from the National Fertility Clinic in Haryana, India, which is known to be a contentious treatment facility because it has treated many of the other Indian women on this list.

Dr. Anurag Bishnoi, who oversaw Singh’s treatment, was pleased with what the fertility facility has accomplished.

Singh and her husband, Deva, had been attempting to conceive a family since they married over 40 years ago, and Deva expressed joy at becoming a parent for the first time.

6. Adriana Iliescu

Adriana Iliescu

Adriana Iliescu was the oldest reported mother in 2005, after giving birth to a daughter at the age of 66.

After nine years of reproductive treatments, she gave birth to her daughter by Cesarean section.

Iliescu told reporters that she had always wanted to be a mother but had never been able to do so normally.

Iliescu told Realitatea TV that she was hopeful that she will be able to see her daughter, Eliza Maria, grow up because her family has a history of longevity.

There have been no news or speculations of Iliescu’s death as of 2023, therefore she is most likely still alive, and Eliza Maria would be 18 years old.

One of the final interviews Iliescu gave was to the Daily Mail in 2010 – Eliza Maria was five years old at the time, and Iliescu stated that she was open to having another child.

Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara is possibly the most divisive of the elder mothers on this list.

She revealed to doctors that she lied about her age in order to undergo fertility therapy at a private clinic in Los Angeles, California.

Bousada de Lara defended her decision after giving birth to twin twins at the end of 2006, saying, “I have always wanted to be a mother, but I never had the opportunity, or found the appropriate man.”

Bousada de Lara’s own family condemned her decision as “selfish and reckless,” predicting that her children would be orphaned.

Bousada de Lara was diagnosed with stomach cancer around a year after giving birth, and her family’s fears came true. On July 11, 2009, Bousada de Lara passed away.

The twins were handed to Bousada de Lara’s nephew and his wife when she died.

Adenuga’s pregnancy and twins’ birth went off without a hitch, and the twins were carried to term.

Panwar had to undergo IVF treatment due to her advanced age, which her husband paid for by selling his buffalos, mortgaging his land, spending his life savings, and taking out a credit card debt.

The Panwars stated that it was all worth it to have their son because they now have an heir to their farmland.
