Strong opposition has been voiced by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to the National Examination Council’s (NECO) new policy requiring N50,000 for certificate reprints.
A report claims that on September 30, 2024, NECO made the fee announcement in Minna, Niger State, through its Registrar, Dantani Wushishi. According to the guideline, requests for reprints must be submitted within a year of the original certificate’s issuance, and the fee will be subject to periodic reviews.

NANS Senate Clerk Abdulyekinn Odunayo responded by denouncing the price and characterizing it as exploitative and exorbitant, particularly in light of the financial struggles that students are currently facing. He maintained that the policy casts doubt on NECO’s commitment to assisting with education and places an unwarranted financial burden on the company. “We strongly condemn NECO’s outrageous decision to charge N50,000 for certificate reprints,” said the statement released by NANS.

The student body voiced their displeasure, calling the policy unfair, especially given the current economic climate. It issued a warning, claiming that the price would increase financial exclusion, restrict students’ access to their diplomas, and unfairly affect those from less fortunate families. In addition, the statement questioned NECO’s finance procedures and service effectiveness, raising questions about transparency. Reiterating its commitment to accessible and reasonably priced education, NANS demanded that the cost be immediately waived, lowered to a manageable amount, the five-year reprint period extended, and student participation in the decision-making process.

The statement concludes, “NANS will not stand by while education is commercialized and students are taken advantage of.”
