The website Naver was used by spectators of the Girls Planet 999 broadcasts to submit suggestions for names, and one of those names was Kep1er. Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer and mathematician who lived throughout the 16th and 17th century and is most known for giving his name to his laws of planetary motion, also came up with the word. He is credited with inventing the term.
On October 22, 2021, on an episode of the Mnet reality survival program named Girls Planet 999, Kep1er was formally introduced to the public for the first time. The program was shown from August 6 to October 22 of the next year, 2021. The show invited 99 participants from China, Japan, and South Korea to participate in a female group that was comprised of members from many countries. There were a total of 99 competitors, but only the best nine would move on to the next round of the game. The regulations of the game were rather specific.
Some of the group’s members had had prior experience working in the entertainment business when the program first started. On March 19, 2015, Choi Yu-jin, who is one of the girls, had her initial debut as a member of the girl group CLC, which is managed by Cube Entertainment.
Additionally, she contributed to the group’s extended play (EP), which was titled First Love. Because of her involvement with Kep1er, she took some time off from the CLC. Prior to her time with Busters from 2019 to 2020, Kang Ye-SEO was a member of the girl group CutieL from 2010 till that year. Another member of the band, Kim Dayeon, competed in the Produce 48 competition in 2018, where she represented CNC Entertainment. Meanwhile, Shen Xiaoting competed in the Produce Camp 2020 competition, where he represented Top Class Entertainment.
Both finished their individual presentations in 70th and 80th place, which was not good enough to advance them through the first round of the competition. Sakamoto Mashir was a trainee at JYP Entertainment from 2016 until 2018, during which time she appeared in the first episode of the reality survival show Stray Kids on Mnet as a member of the female trainee team. However, she was eliminated in the first episode and did not advance to subsequent episodes. Following her success in the Produce 48 competition, Kim Dayeon parted ways with CNC Entertainment and joined Stadium Entertainment as a signed artist. After the failure of her first ambitions to release music, she parted ways with the record label.
Shen Xiaoting was a competitive ballroom and modern dancer. She earned a gold medal in a modern dance sport competition in Shanghai, and she ranked sixth in the world in a competition held in the United Kingdom.
The band known as Kep1er was supposed to launch their first official project on December 14, 2021, and pre-orders for their debut EP, titled First Impact, were supposed to begin on November 29. On December 11 of that same year (2021), they were also supposed to have a performance at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. However, due to the fact that one of the group’s staff members tested positive for COVID-19, the first performance of the group has been postponed until January 3, 2022.
The performance that their group was scheduled to give at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards was scrapped. On December 14, it was disclosed that members of the group Mashiro and Xiaoting tested positive for COVID-19. On December 26, 2022, it was declared that both of them had totally recovered from the illness.
