This department is responsible for all anaesthetic services required by the surgical specialties in the hospital (DELSUTH)
Due to the highly specialist anaesthetic services this department provides, it receives referrals from Other tertiary and secondary Care facilities to Oghara for surgical and paediatric Surgical care.
The department consists of State Of the art 6 – bedded General ICU for Critical Care patients and post-operative care. Staffed by 20 ICU nurses, this is the only facility with Such State Of the art ICU Services in the region.
6 State Of the Art fully equipped theatres 3 in main theatre Suite for general surgery and laparoscopic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic and trauma Surgery including Joint replacements, urological OPS, Gynecological OPS, cancer OPS, ENT, Eye, Paediatric and Obstetric surgeries.
A state Of the art 3-bed post anaesthetic care unit With Capable and fully trained peri-operative nurses. The department provides day stay Anaesthetic Services and Sedation for non-ambulatory patients in the 64-Slice CT Suite and 1.5 Tesla MRI unit.
The department provides regional anaesthesia and conscious sedation services on suitable patients.
The department is an accredited centre for resuscitation training -BLS, ALS etc. The first centre accredited in the West African region for the ALERT ( Acute Life Events Recognition and Treatment) Course is domiciled in this department.
The skills centre in the hospital has a major input from the anaesthesia department
The department has 6 Consultants. 3 Of which are Internationally trained especially in sub – Specialties such as Intensive Care Medicine Obstetrics and Regional Anaesthesia Care.
The department provides full Obstetric Anaesthesia Care including painless services Epidural).
The department has critical and modem equipment and facilities in its armentarrium e.g. TCI Machines, Peri-Operative portable USS, Hotlines, Difficult intubation kits e.g Fiberoptic laryngoscopes, videoscopes, vast array of Laryngeal mask airways ( Intubating l- Gel, Prossal, supreme, re-inforced etc.), manual and automatic defibrillators, TOE BiPAP machineS etc- There are Pre-Anaesthetic and Pain Clinics run by the Department on a weekly basis.
The department has a training annexe at the central Hospital Warri with its complements of Consultants and trainees. The department has 20 trainees (Senior registrars and registrars) at various stages of their training.
The department is accredited by both the Postgraduate Colleges of the West African College of Surgeons, WACS and the National Postgraduate Medical College, NPMCN.
There is a well established monthly Audit Morbidity/ Mortality Strong Research programme within the department.
The department looks forward to the relaunch of the Renal transplant programme (which was Suspended 5 years ago) as well as the provision of robust Vascular and Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic Services at the commissioning Of the 80- bed new Hospital annexe.
The department runs a Community Anaesthetic Outpost at the General Hospital, Oghara, providing General Anaesthesia for simple operations etc.
