Richard Jenkins is an exceptional young man who triumphed academically despite many early challenges. His story highlights the impact of resilience, hard work, and community support in reaching one’s goals.

Growing up in extreme poverty and homelessness, Richard confronted severe physical and health issues. Recognizing education as a key to escaping poverty, he dedicated himself to academic excellence.

Supported by organizations like Mighty Writers and the People’s Emergency Center, Richard achieved remarkable success thanks to those who believed in him.

Jenkins, who had a perfect high school record, applied to multiple colleges, three of which were Ivy League. After being turned down by Yale University and placed on a waitlist at the University of Pennsylvania, he was eventually accepted to Harvard University, where he is now studying computer science on a full-ride scholarship, meaning that the university will cover all of the tuition for students from families making less than $65,000 annually.

Richard Jenkins has excelled as a musician in addition to his academic pursuits. He is a violist who has played in a number of ensembles, such as the Philadelphia All-City Orchestra and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra.

Throughout his challenging upbringing, Richard found solace and happiness in music, and he intends to go on performing in college.

Many people find inspiration in Richard’s tale, which also emphasizes the value of funding projects and programs that give chances and resources to those who most need them.
