The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has addressed the confusion surrounding why some Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates are unable to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
Recent complaints from HND graduates claimed that they were excluded from NYSC mobilization due to completing their Ordinary National Diploma (OND) on a part-time basis, despite finishing their HND full-time. However, JAMB has firmly stated that it has no involvement in this issue.
JAMB’s Role and Responsibilities
In a statement issued on Monday, September 2, in Abuja, JAMB spokesperson Dr. Fabian Benjamin clarified that the Board’s responsibilities do not extend to the admission processes for HND programs.
He referenced Section 5(2) of the law establishing JAMB, which outlines the Board’s scope: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Board shall be responsible for determining matriculation requirements and conducting examinations leading to undergraduate admissions, as well as for admissions to National Diploma and Nigerian Certificate in Education courses.
However, the Board shall not be responsible for examinations or any other selective processes for postgraduate courses or any other courses offered by tertiary institutions.”
Dr. Benjamin emphasized that JAMB’s involvement ends at the National Diploma (ND) level, and the Board has no jurisdiction over HND admissions or NYSC mobilization.
Why Some HND Graduates Are Not Mobilized for NYSC
According to JAMB, many students were admitted into their National Diploma (ND) programs without JAMB’s awareness.
The Board later endorsed these admissions as a one-time concession, but this endorsement does not extend to subsequent HND admissions.
Therefore, it is misguided to hold JAMB accountable for the mobilization status of HND graduates.
The Board also issued a warning to candidates making false accusations, noting that some individuals might be engaging in actions that could border on criminality, and JAMB will take appropriate action when necessary.
Final Thoughts
JAMB urges the public to disregard these baseless accusations and understand that the Board has no mandate concerning HND admissions or NYSC mobilization. It remains committed to fulfilling its core responsibilities and maintaining transparency.
For students, understanding JAMB’s role is crucial to navigating the educational and mobilization process without misconceptions.
